A U.S. Army unit is offering soldiers a reenlistment bonus with a pop-culture twist: four extra days off timed to the November release of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Commanders of the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia, believe free time to dive into the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — in which players commit carjackings, battle police in shootouts, and attempt audacious heists — will persuade some soldiers to extend their military commitments.

The Nov. 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to rank among the year's biggest entertainment events. The bar is high: its predecessor, 2013's Grand Theft Auto V, has sold more than 200 million copies and crossed $1 billion in sales within three days of launch, ranking among the most commercially successful entertainment releases of any medium. Publisher Take-Two Interactive has not released preorder sales figures, but CEO Strauss Zelnick recently described them as "unprecedented and astonishing."

The initiative was hatched by a career counselor with the engineer battalion together with commanders, tying a retention perk to the game's launch and, in part, reminding soldiers of their approaching reenlistment dates, said Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a Fort Stewart spokesperson.

"The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what soldiers are interested in," Tomko said Thursday in a statement to The Associated Press.

In a memo to soldiers, battalion commanders wrote that those who sign reenlistment contracts by Nov. 14 would receive "a special 4 day pass."

"This special pass is specifically designed to coincide with the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI," battalion commander Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson wrote.

Tomko confirmed the authenticity of the July 28 memo, which was photographed and posted online. At least 20 of the 130 eligible soldiers have signed up for the bonus, she said. To qualify, soldiers must commit to serving at least two more years in uniform.

The perk lands as the Army works to rebuild its recruiting ranks after missing its enlistment targets in 2022 and 2023, and it joins a familiar menu of retention levers — reenlistment bonuses, duty-station-of-choice options and special passes — that commanders use to keep experienced soldiers in the force. The first measure of whether game time moves those numbers will come at the memo's Nov. 14 signing deadline, five days before Grand Theft Auto VI reaches players.

Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI has been building since 2023, when its first cinematic trailer showed a return to the series' fictional Vice City — a satirical analogue of Miami — along with an expanded swath of Florida-based locales, including gator-infested swamps.

Underscoring the hype, developer Rockstar Games plans to debut gameplay video next week in an extended trailer on Netflix. The rollout was preempted when hackers leaked apparent footage online this week.
