President Donald Trump described his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very productive” and said that “tremendous things will be happening,” although he did not provide specific details about potential announcements.

The United States and China agreed to extend their trade truce through January 10, 2027. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier in the week that the extension would give the two countries two additional months to continue negotiations. The fixed date gives the talks a defined endpoint, with the truce arrangement staying in place in the meantime.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that the two sides had reached a partial trade agreement. The deal covers selected U.S. agricultural products and medical devices, as well as certain Chinese consumer goods classified as non-sensitive. Only a narrow set of categories has been disclosed so far, with the deal’s full scope still to be detailed.

Greer said the agreement represented only part of the broader discussions. He told reporters that additional details would be released on Monday, including information about the specific products and industries covered. That release will be the first full measure of how broad the agreement actually is.

According to Greer, trade was the primary focus of the talks between Trump and Xi. He said artificial intelligence and national security were not the main subjects of the meeting. Trump nevertheless shared one detail about the AI discussion, saying Xi appeared to prefer the term “super intelligence,” which Trump described as more accurate.

The meeting also addressed China’s relationship with Iran. U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue told CNBC on Friday that Trump made clear that Chinese assistance to Iran was unacceptable.

Perdue said the concern applied to both direct and indirect support, including intelligence sharing, parts, and military equipment. He added that the United States had been raising the issue with China for weeks, describing it as “an ongoing drumbeat” in discussions between the two countries. The repeated messaging points to Iran as a standing item on the bilateral agenda alongside trade.

Perdue said Trump repeated the message during Thursday’s meeting with Xi, indicating that the issue remains a priority for the administration.

He described the discussion between the two leaders as candid and open and said their relationship appeared to be developing. According to Perdue, each meeting provides a different level of understanding, particularly on difficult issues such as Iran.

The two countries are now proceeding under the extended trade truce, with further information on the partial trade agreement expected Monday. With Monday’s product-level disclosures and the January 10, 2027 truce date, the negotiation now has both a near-term checkpoint and a defined endpoint ahead.
