MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace said Friday that President Donald Trump has openly revealed why he refuses to meet the demands of Republican senators who are holding up the confirmation of Todd Blanche, his nominee for Deputy Attorney General — the No. 2 position at the Department of Justice — and his former personal defense attorney in the Manhattan hush money criminal case.

"Donald Trump is saying the quiet part out loud today when it comes to exactly why Todd Blanche still has not put an official end to the almost $1.8 million slush fund that could potentially award payouts to January 6th insurrectionists," Wallace wrote. This fund is the principal sticking point for Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that oversees DOJ nominations, and most likely for a number of other Republican senators remaining in the background.

Wallace noted that it would take only "the stroke of a pen" for Blanche to formally nullify the fund and proceed toward confirmation. "But if there were any lingering open questions as to why he hasn't done that, and where the resistance to doing that lies, Trump solved that mystery for us today."

Wallace pointed to a lengthy post Trump published on his Truth Social platform, in which he indicated that he does, in fact, still want the fund to remain active and specifically wants it to apply to those involved in the January 6 events at the U.S. Capitol. The posture is consistent with the sweeping pardons and sentence commutations Trump issued for hundreds of January 6 defendants on his first day back in office.

"John Cornyn never had a problem with the so called 'Fund,' which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas, who easily won the Nomination for the United States Senate," Trump wrote.

"Perhaps there has never been a group of people treated so badly in our Nation's history," Trump continued. "They are suffering still, many ruined, and I felt that they should be given compensation for what has been done to them."

Wallace clarified exactly who Trump was referring to, describing individuals who were "defecating inside the United States Capitol, beating cops to within inches and seconds of their lives, tasing cops, beating cops with flagpoles, ransacking the United States Capitol, obstructing an official proceeding, and threatening the life of Donald Trump's own vice president, Mike Pence."
