The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed its September 2026 payment dates, following its standard three-day staggered schedule, with an additional date for beneficiaries flagged for review. SASSA disburses grants to more than 18 million beneficiaries each month, making the staggered system critical to keeping the National Payment System and physical pay points functional.

Confirmed September 2026 Payment Dates

• Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, September 2
• Disability Grant and War Veterans Grant: Thursday, September 3
• Children's Grants (Child Support, Foster Child, and Care Dependency): Friday, September 4
• Review and eLife Certification payments: Monday, September 7

These dates come from the Department of Social Development's 2026/27 payment schedule, approved by the National Treasury.

Why SASSA Pays on These Dates

SASSA follows a set of consistent rules when determining payment dates. Grants are disbursed as early in the month as possible and staggered over three days to reduce strain on the National Payment System and physical pay points. SASSA also avoids making payments on the first of the month, on a Monday, over a weekend, or on the day immediately after a public holiday.

September aligns with this pattern without any conflicts — there is no need to shift dates around a weekend or holiday, so the schedule falls on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

SASSA Grant Amounts for September 2026

Grant amounts for September remain unchanged from the rates that took effect in April 2026:

• Older Persons, Disability, and Care Dependency Grant: R2,400
• War Veterans Grant: R2,420
• Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid: R580
• Foster Child Grant: R1,290 (rising to R1,300 in October)
• SRD Grant: R370, unchanged and extended through March 31, 2027

The Foster Child Grant increase to R1,300 in October follows SASSA's pattern of implementing secondary adjustments outside the main April cycle.

Grant-in-Aid

Grant-in-Aid is paid together with the main grant to which it is attached. It is deposited into the beneficiary's account on the same day as the Older Persons, Disability, War Veterans, or Care Dependency payment. No separate payment date applies.

SRD R370 Grant Payment in September

The R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant follows a separate schedule from the three-day system described above. SASSA pays SRD grants in batches later in the month — typically from around the 24th through month-end — after verifying beneficiaries' details against the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), the Department of Home Affairs, and their bank.

The SRD grant was introduced in May 2020 as a temporary COVID-19 relief measure and has been repeatedly extended amid ongoing national debate over whether South Africa should adopt a permanent basic income support framework.

The Fourth Payment Day Explained

Beneficiaries flagged by SASSA for a review or eLife Certification may receive their payment on Monday, September 7, rather than on the standard dates. SASSA sends a bulk SMS to notify affected individuals.

Those who are flagged should:

• Visit their nearest SASSA office with their ID and any documents specified in the SMS
• Complete their review or eLife Certification
• Ensure their personal, banking, and contact details are current
• Respond promptly if SASSA requests additional information

Failure to respond to a review request can result in grant suspension in the following cycle, and cancellation if the issue remains unresolved.

Reminders Before Payday

• Once a payment is deposited, the funds remain in the beneficiary's account. There is no requirement to withdraw on the exact payment date.
• ATMs and retail stores including Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Usave can be used to avoid long queues at SASSA pay points.
• Beneficiaries should keep their banking and contact details up to date to prevent payment delays.
• If a payment does not arrive when expected, beneficiaries should contact SASSA directly.

Postbank Gold Card Deadline

Beneficiaries still using a Postbank Gold Card must switch to the new Black Card before August 31, 2026. Postbank has stated that this deadline is final.

The switch is free and requires only a South African ID or temporary ID — no forms are needed. Beneficiaries can complete the switch at Postbank points located inside Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar stores. Dialing 120355# will locate the nearest site.

As of early August, approximately 250,000 to 280,000 beneficiaries still needed to make the switch. Social Development Minister Dina Pule has assured beneficiaries that the card transition will not affect their grant payments.

SASSA's Review Crackdown Continues

SASSA continues to tighten its eligibility verification processes. By the end of 2025, the agency had flagged 291,581 beneficiaries for review and cancelled 34,661 grants, resulting in savings of over R170 million ($10,539,320). The agency cross-checks applicants against records from SARS, UIF, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), correctional services, and banking and credit bureaus.

Applicants for the Older Persons Grant must also meet SASSA's income and asset thresholds. Monthly income must be below R9,350 for single applicants or R18,700 for married applicants. Assets must be valued at less than R1,584,000 for single applicants or R3,168,000 for married applicants.
