Stripe Partners With Stablecoin-Focused Plasma to Develop Multicurrency Payment Cards

Plasma, a company focused on stablecoin payments, has announced a partnership with payments provider Stripe to jointly develop new products. The first step of the collaboration, announced today, centers on the joint development of payment cards that support multiple currencies.

Rather than simply deploying an existing Stripe product, Plasma will act as a design partner in enhancing the card experience. The stated aim is to simplify the payment process for consumers and businesses making purchases across different countries and currencies.

According to sources citing an announcement from Stripe Crypto, the underlying infrastructure will support currencies including the US dollar, Brazilian real, euro, Mexican peso, and Colombian peso. On the stablecoin side, USDC and OUSD are among the announced options, with USDC being the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle.

Stripe's card infrastructure is currently available in more than 30 countries, and the company plans to expand its supported regions to more than 100 countries by 2027. The company noted that this expansion does not mean cards developed with Plasma will be immediately available in all of those markets — meaning the initial market availability of the jointly developed cards remains to be detailed.

The partnership announcement did not specify what function Plasma's native token, XPL, will perform in connection with the cards, leaving the token's role in the product an open question for now.

The joint card development was presented as the first tangible collaboration announced by the two parties under their broader product partnership. Stripe, one of the world's largest privately held payments companies, has been expanding its stablecoin-related offerings in recent years, while Plasma operates a blockchain network purpose-built for stablecoin payments. Taken together, the collaboration pairs mainstream card infrastructure with a blockchain built specifically for stablecoin payments, in line with the partnership's stated goal of simplifying purchases across countries and currencies.
