BancaStato Launches Regulated Crypto Trading Through Sygnum Partnership

Swiss cantonal bank BancaStato has launched regulated cryptocurrency trading in partnership with Sygnum, adding digital asset access to its existing banking platform. BancaStato, the cantonal bank serving the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, is among a growing number of Switzerland's state-backed regional banks expanding into digital assets.

The service allows BancaStato customers to buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Solana (SOL) directly through the bank's web and mobile banking applications. The offering is delivered through Sygnum's application programming interface and is integrated into BancaStato's existing Avaloq banking environment.

BancaStato Adds Crypto Trading to Existing Banking Channels

BancaStato said the integration gives clients access to regulated crypto trading without requiring them to leave the bank's established web and mobile banking channels. Customers can place market orders either by entering cryptocurrency quantities or by specifying a preferred fiat value.

The arrangement allows clients to manage traditional investments and digital assets through a single banking interface. Sygnum provides the trading execution and institutional-grade custody infrastructure behind the service, while client digital assets are held within Sygnum's regulated custody solution rather than on BancaStato's balance sheet. Sygnum is itself a FINMA-regulated digital asset bank, and Switzerland's established crypto regulatory framework has made such bank-to-bank partnerships a recurring model in the Swiss financial sector.

Sygnum announced the launch in an official post, stating: "📰 @BancaStato has joined Sygnum's B2B banking platform, enabling regulated crypto trading directly through the bank's existing Avaloq web and mobile banking channels. According to Sygnum Chief B2B Officer Fritz W. Jost, the partnership reflects growing institutional demand for regulated digital asset services that are embedded into existing banking systems. He also said BancaStato is the first bank operating on Avaloq's software-as-a-service environment to provide API-based crypto trading through Sygnum directly inside its e-banking platforms.

The API-based model removes the need for a separate order management system. Sygnum said this structure can help the bank simplify operations while preserving existing risk management processes and compliance standards.

Partnership Expands Sygnum's Regulated Banking Network

Curzio De Gottardi, Head of Products and Services at BancaStato, said the partnership strengthens the bank's investment offering by combining traditional financial products and regulated digital assets within one platform.

BancaStato is also joining Sygnum's business-to-business banking network, which now supports more than 25 banks and financial institutions. Sygnum's network includes PostFinance, Zuger Kantonalbank, Bordier & Cie, and SocGen FORGE, and provides regulated access to digital asset services for millions of Swiss residents.

The announcement follows Sygnum Europe's operational launch under its Crypto-Asset Service Provider license in Liechtenstein. That authorization enables Sygnum Europe to provide regulated digital asset infrastructure across the European Union and the European Economic Area under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which establishes harmonized crypto-asset rules across EU member states.

The BancaStato launch adds to the number of established financial institutions using regulated infrastructure providers to offer cryptocurrency services inside conventional banking platforms, rather than operating separate standalone trading venues.
