Technology group Wärtsilä has been recognised among the world's top 10 battery energy storage system (BESS) integrators in Wood Mackenzie's inaugural Global BESS Integrator Comprehensive Ranking, making it the only European-headquartered company included in the global top 10. The Finnish engineering group's inclusion stands out in a ranking otherwise dominated by Asian and North American competitors, underscoring Europe's relatively limited footprint in a sector increasingly central to the global energy transition.

The recognition highlights the growing importance of proven delivery capability, software expertise, and lifecycle support as battery energy storage becomes critical infrastructure. As renewable energy penetration increases worldwide, grid-scale storage is shifting from a supplementary technology to a foundational requirement for balancing intermittent generation. According to Wood Mackenzie, competition in the sector is increasingly being shaped not only by manufacturing scale, but by the ability to execute projects successfully across international markets and support customers throughout the full asset lifecycle.

Wood Mackenzie's assessment evaluated suppliers across ten criteria, including technology maturity, research and development, safety, supply chain resilience, ESG performance, and financial strength. The report identified execution experience as a key competitive differentiator, noting the growing importance of system design, commissioning expertise, and long-term operational performance as projects increase in size and complexity. The integrator role itself has become a distinct competitive category separate from cell manufacturing, as asset owners increasingly demand end-to-end accountability spanning hardware, software, and long-term operational performance.
