Tina Brown: A 'New Loser Mood' Is Swirling Around Trump as Allies and Supporters Grow Frustrated

Journalist and former magazine editor Tina Brown, who edited Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The Daily Beast during a decades-long career in media commentary, is highlighting what she describes as mounting frustrations with President Donald Trump among his own allies and supporters, as new polling data and public appearances underscore eroding enthusiasm.

A Politico report published Wednesday revealed that Trump has lost 13 percentage points with his own supporters since May. While gas prices appear to be a contributing factor, the decline is not solely tied to energy costs. According to the survey, conducted by independent polling firm Public First, just 37 percent of self-identified MAGA voters said the U.S. should "continue its involvement only if it doesn't increase costs," up from 29 percent who held that view in May. Nearly one in five MAGA voters told pollsters they want the U.S. to end the war regardless of costs. Politico characterized the findings as evidence that "patience is wearing thin" even among MAGA Republicans.

Brown argued that this marks the first time discontent is breaking through to GOP voters. "MAGA devotees may still cheer, but there is a new loser mood swirling around Trump, a boredom with his bloated act," she wrote. "His prime time address to the nation on 'election integrity' last week sank like a stone."

She noted that even television networks declined to carry the remarks. "Why should networks take his stale reruns when they have plenty of stale reruns of their own?" Brown wrote. She also observed that Fox News declined to comment further on the 2020 election following the speech, refusing to entertain the notion that "the Chinese may be to blame for Trump's 2020 election loss," and gave his address "a hard pass." The decision by Fox News, which has historically been the most sympathetic major cable network to Trump, not to carry a prime-time presidential address marked a notable breach in what had been a reliable broadcast platform.

A separate poll released Wednesday by the American Research Group found that 67 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump and his performance in office, reinforcing the picture of a president facing declining support not only among the broader electorate but within his own base.

"And as the pocketbook economy refuses to respond to his hype with the same enthusiasm as Wall Street, something new and dark is taking hold," Brown added.

Her commentary comes amid ongoing casualties reported from the Iran war, a conflict that has become a flashpoint for domestic political frustration as voters confront rising costs and extended military engagement.

Brown also took aim at Trump's appearance at the World Cup, writing: "America is still cringing from the sight of the lumbering dufus POTUS," for his refusal to leave the stage.

"Sometimes, it's the most obvious things that reveal character in the raw and penetrate the torpid public psyche," she concluded. "We've had nearly ten years of the Trump clown show, but rarely displayed in front of a global television audience of 1.5 billion people."
