President Donald Trump has recently appeared with what seems to be a fuller head of hair in a slightly different shade, and according to one of his former biographers, there is a specific reason for the change.

Speaking with the Daily Beast's Joanna Coles, author Michael Wolff — who has written multiple books on Trump, including the bestselling Fire and Fury and its sequels Siege and Landslide — explained that the president is, for all practical purposes, bald on top. Wolff said Trump's updated look represents yet another effort to conceal that fact as his remaining hair continues to thin.

Coles remarked during the interview that the president appeared to be wearing a "hamster" on his head, prompting Wolff to delve into Trump's well-documented hair history. Trump's hair has been a recurring subject of public fascination and tabloid speculation for decades, dating back to his time as a Manhattan real estate developer in the 1980s, and he has periodically addressed the scrutiny directly — including allowing a doctor to examine his scalp at a 2015 campaign event in an effort to dispel wig rumors.

Wolff described what lies beneath Trump's carefully maintained appearance.

"Well, I can tell you what's... under Donald Trump's hair," Wolff said. "Nothing. That's actually what the top of Donald Trump's head is like."

Wolff also recounted that Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter, had previously mocked her father's elaborate hair maintenance routine to friends. According to Wolff's account, Ivanka described the follicle mechanics as covering "an absolutely clean pate—a contained island after scalp reduction surgery—surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray."

Wolff characterized the hairstyle as a central component of Trump's public identity and career trajectory.

"He's a performer. Fourteen years as the star of a top-rated reality television show," Wolff said, referring to Trump's tenure on NBC's "The Apprentice," which ran from 2004 to 2015 and helped transform him from a property developer into a nationally recognized television personality. "It is about people looking at you. He understands that, as so many politicians, by the way, do not."
