Tokyo, Japan, October 6, 2026 (Chainwire) — Startale Japan today announced Startale Bond, Japan's first digital corporate bond¹ to pay both scheduled interest and final principal redemption in a yen-denominated, trust-type stablecoin. In practical terms, the bond pays out to holders across its lifecycle in a yen stablecoin rather than through traditional payment rails.
The issuance places JPYSC — a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank — directly into a corporate financing transaction. Both scheduled interest payments and the final principal redemption will be made in JPYSC, marking the first time this structure has been used for a digital corporate bond in Japan.
Startale Japan Co., Ltd. is the legal issuer of the Startale Bond. The offering is limited to individual investors and companies in Japan and is not being made available to overseas investors. That domestic-only scope makes the issuance a contained first step, with the company stating that learnings from this pilot are intended to inform an eventual extension of the same mechanism to a wide range of businesses across Japan.
A Stablecoin Moves Into Corporate Finance
The issuance opens a new use case for JPYSC beyond blockchain transactions, bringing a yen-denominated stablecoin into an established corporate financing structure. Because JPYSC is designed to track the Japanese yen 1:1, the bond's scheduled interest and principal payments are denominated to follow the yen throughout the bond's life even though they arrive in stablecoin form. By using JPYSC for both interest and principal redemption payments, Startale Japan is demonstrating how stablecoin infrastructure can connect with traditional financial instruments and Japan's existing capital markets.
"By bringing finance onchain, we want to create new options for corporate fundraising and individual investment," said Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Group Pte. Ltd. "With this bond issuance, we are piloting JPYSC for actual interest and principal redemption payments. Learnings from this initiative will allow us to eventually expand this mechanism to a wide range of businesses across Japan, creating new mechanisms where people can continuously support companies through investment. We will continue pushing this frontier with the hope that, looking back in the years to come, this initiative will be remembered as a major turning point in finance."
Beyond Trading, Payments, and Remittances
Stablecoins have largely been associated with crypto trading, payments, and remittances. Startale Bond extends their use into corporate finance by making JPYSC the payment mechanism across multiple stages of a bond's lifecycle, covering both scheduled interest payments and the final repayment of principal. The stablecoin carrying those payouts, JPYSC, qualifies as a Type 3 Electronic Payment Instrument under Japan's Payment Services Act, meaning the bond's payments run through an instrument that sits within Japan's existing payments framework.
The structure offers a real-world example of how onchain settlement can operate inside a conventional financial instrument rather than as a separate, blockchain-native product. For Startale, SBI, and Japan's wider financial sector, the issuance also establishes a model for how yen-denominated stablecoins could play a role in future capital-market activity, with the experience gained through Startale Bond able to inform potential applications involving businesses, financial institutions, tokenized assets, and forms of onchain finance.
How the SBI–Startale Collaboration Fits Together
JPYSC was developed through a collaboration between SBI Group and Startale Group. SBI Shinsei Trust Bank issues JPYSC and manages the trust assets backing it, SBI VC Trade serves as the issuance trustor and leads issuance and distribution, and Startale Group is responsible for the technology supporting the stablecoin. The Startale Bond brings these pieces together in a corporate financing transaction for the first time, showing how a regulated yen stablecoin can move beyond digital-asset markets and become part of the infrastructure supporting established financial instruments.
