London whisky enthusiasts will have the chance to compete for a place in the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's national blind tasting final, with the city's heat taking place at 19 Greville Street on Wednesday 2 September 2026 as part of the Society's inaugural Caskmaster 2026 championship.
The format is demanding: competitors will have 30 minutes to evaluate eight Society drams and match each one against nine possible identities. The blind format is a natural extension of how the Society already presents its bottles: members buy whisky identified only by tasting notes and cask details, with the distillery kept secret until after purchase. Caskmaster turns that everyday act of tasting without labels into a competitive skill test. The top five contenders from the London heat will advance to the Grand Final, scheduled for 12 November 2026 in Edinburgh. Society officials confirmed that travel and accommodation expenses for the five London qualifiers will be covered in full.
The competition marks the first UK blind tasting championship hosted by the Society, following a trial run in Australia. Heats are being staged across four Society venues: Leith, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.
The eventual champion will receive lifetime membership of the Society along with a four-day retreat in Speyside in March 2027, a region home to many of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries.
Calum Lawson, Member Experience Manager at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, said: "At the Society, we have always believed that flavour should do the talking. Caskmaster puts that to the ultimate test. This is whisky as it should be, shared, debated and enjoyed, but with a healthy dose of competition thrown in. It's a rare opportunity to test your palate against like-minded people and, for one person, to walk away with a prize that will last a lifetime."
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 and today serves 41,000 members worldwide. It bottles single cask spirits from more than 180 distilleries without revealing brand names, and operates four Members' Rooms across Leith, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, alongside a network of 100 partner bars. The launch of a members' competition follows a broader pattern among whisky clubs and societies of using experiential events, from tastings to festivals, to deepen engagement beyond bottle sales. How the inaugural championship is received, and whether it returns in future years, will be worth watching.
