LONDON — Samsung Electronics is positioning its first Galaxy AI glasses as a lighter, more comfortable alternative to Meta's smart eyewear, leveraging a smartphone-connected architecture it calls "split computing" to shed weight without sacrificing capability.
The intelligent eyewear, built on Android XR — Google's operating system for extended-reality devices, first detailed in December 2024 — was unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2026 on Wednesday. It integrates Google's Gemini artificial intelligence and incorporates design partnerships with global eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Samsung presented four designs at the London launch, including two debuted at a product briefing held at Old Billingsgate on Thursday, and intends to bring the products to market later this year.
A Different Approach to Weight and Comfort
"Meta and other competitors already have glasses on the market, but Samsung is taking a different approach," said Choi Jae-in, head of the extended reality research and development team at Samsung Electronics' Mobile eXperience division. "We believe Samsung has an advantage in making the product lighter and more comfortable to wear for long periods."
While Samsung has not disclosed exact specifications such as precise weight, Choi indicated the glasses would compare favorably against rival products like the Ray-Ban Meta, which weighs approximately 50 grams and delivers up to eight hours of battery life. Samsung's Intelligent Eyewear is rated for up to nine hours on a single charge — a figure Choi said was based on a mixed-use scenario encompassing power-intensive features such as video streaming and Gemini Live, not merely music playback. The accompanying charging case supplies up to seven additional full charges.
The key to the reduced weight, Samsung said, is a system it developed jointly with Google from the project's inception. Dubbed "split computing," the architecture distributes processing tasks between the glasses and a tethered smartphone. Camera data is partially handled on the glasses themselves, while heavier post-processing draws on the phone's memory and compute resources. The approach plays to Samsung's position as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer by shipment volume, giving the glasses an enormous pool of potential companion devices.
"The glasses can remain light because they are closely connected to the smartphone," Choi explained. "We developed this concept with Google from the beginning. Split computing is one of the biggest technological strengths of Samsung's AI glasses."
Cross-Platform Compatibility With Deeper Galaxy Integration
The first-generation device will support not only Galaxy smartphones but also other Android devices and Apple's iOS products. Galaxy users, however, will gain deeper integration across the Samsung ecosystem, including smartphones, watches, wireless earbuds, and Samsung Health — with controls for photography, calls, music playback, and fitness data.
Samsung said it secured approximately 200 patents during development. The covered technologies include an ultraslim hinge that transmits electrical signals between the frame front and temples, a frame architecture engineered for improved weight balance and thermal management, and speakers designed to withstand repeated exposure to sunscreen and cosmetics. Some patented innovations will be introduced gradually in subsequent products as Samsung broadens its AI eyewear portfolio.
Premium Positioning and Retail Strategy
The company withheld details on pricing, initial launch markets, and sales targets. However, Choi indicated the glasses would occupy the premium tier: "Considering the technologies involved and the quality of the finish, the product needs to be in the premium category."
Samsung plans to select its primary launch markets based on regional demand analysis and the retail footprints of its partners, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Those partnerships are also expected to attract younger demographics, particularly consumers in their twenties. Rather than distributing primarily through mobile carriers, Samsung is weighing an eyewear-store-first retail model, anticipating that fittings and hands-on trials will be central to the purchasing experience. Prescription lens fitting will be available at optical shops, with tinted and photochromic lens options also supported.
"Before talking about what technology or AI is inside the glasses, our goal was to make a pair of glasses that people would want to wear the moment they saw them," Choi said. "We want to offer designs attractive enough that even people who do not normally wear glasses might consider trying them."
A Rapidly Expanding Market
The AI glasses market is growing quickly as integrated cameras, voice assistants, and generative AI enhance the devices' everyday utility. Samsung's entry alongside Meta's established Ray-Ban line brings two of the world's largest technology companies into direct competition in a category that, until recently, was dominated by startups and niche hardware makers. According to market researcher Omdia, global AI glasses shipments reached 8.7 million units in 2025, a 322 percent year-over-year increase driven by surging consumer interest in the emerging category.
