Rick Wilson: Trump's Uninhibited Ramblings Are Shattering a Core MAGA Myth
Key Takeaways
- •Rick Wilson, a co-founder of The Lincoln Project, said on the "Fast Politics" podcast that President Trump's apparent decline has removed his ability to filter what he says publicly.
- •Wilson and host Molly Jong-Fast described a turbulent week for the president that included the firing of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the cancellation of a livestreamed execution, and the short tenure of Press Secretary Katie Zacharia.
- •Wilson cited footage of Trump walking past the presidential limousine, The Beast, and out into an empty field as the week's most striking symbol of apparent decline.
- •Wilson claimed many MAGA supporters find Trump's repeated remarks about the attractiveness of figures such as Ohio Sen. John Husted concerning because they conflict with his image of robust masculinity.
- •The discussion centered on political image and how Trump's behavior is received by supporters, not on an independent medical evaluation.

President Donald Trump's apparent decline has left him unable to filter the thoughts that pass through his mind, and in doing so he is dismantling a major myth held by his supporters—saying things many in the MAGA base find "very off-putting," according to conservative commentator Rick Wilson.
Wilson, a vocal conservative opponent of Trump and his MAGA agenda and a co-founder of The Lincoln Project, made the remarks as a guest on the latest episode of the "Fast Politics" podcast. He and host Molly Jong-Fast discussed what they described as a chaotic and embarrassing week for the president, spanning the firing of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the cancellation of a livestreamed execution, and the brief tenure of White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia.
Beyond that turmoil, Wilson argued that the week's most potent symbol was another clip—one he said appears to expose Trump's mental decline.
"I mean, to my mind, the weirdest symbol of the whole week was him walking past The Beast, not knowing where he was, just rolling on past the car, walking out into an empty field all by himself," Wilson said. "I'm like, 'Is he going to go out there and put his arms out as the UFO comes down to swoop him up finally?'"
Jong-Fast wondered how conservative media figures would have reacted if former President Joe Biden had a similar moment. Wilson said such an incident would have prompted Fox News to ask around the clock, "Is the president mentally competent?"
"Yesterday, I was talking to George Conway, and he's like, 'My prediction is he's going to make it through the next two years,'" Wilson added. "And I said, 'I don't know what condition he's going to make it through in.' This is a guy who looks like he's really... I mean, when he got to Mar-a-Lago on, I guess it was Friday night, and there was that photograph of him at Mar-a-Lago with the half of his face slouching again; he looked like he was on death's door, knocking aggressively. This guy is not in a good place."
Wilson and Jong-Fast also observed that Trump's decline appears to be making him increasingly uninhibited in what he says publicly—a trend on display at recent midterm rallies, where he has repeatedly remarked on the attractiveness of Ohio Sen. John Husted and others.
"And he's talking about his butt, he's talking about his jawline, he says he's out of central casting," Jong-Fast said. "I mean, it does feel like... He's not able to not do things anymore."
"He cannot stop his mouth from saying whatever is in his brain," Wilson responded. "He comes right out and lets it rip. And look, one of the things I found most fascinating about this is, this is one of those weird things that MAGA finds very off-putting. They find it very concerning because one of the things they thought that Trump coded for was robust, strict masculinity... But now they're looking around... like, 'Oh, no, he didn't really mean that. He was joking. It was completely just a joke one time that he told four times during the week over and over again about different men.'"
The exchange framed the issue as a question of political image and audience reaction: Wilson and Jong-Fast were discussing how Trump's public behavior is being received by MAGA supporters, rather than presenting an independent medical assessment.
In Wilson's view, the phenomenon reveals as much about Trump's supporters as it does about the president himself.
"To my mind, it's more interesting about what it reflects about MAGA masculinity or lack thereof or concern about than about Trump himself, because he is clearly a man in physical and mental decline and s——'s just going to come out of his mouth like crazy in the next couple of months," he said.
