The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has signed a memorandum of agreement with Mitsui & Co. (Asia Pacific) Pte. Ltd. to conduct field trials testing the application of nanotechnology in coconut farming.
The partnership will span two years of field trials aimed at determining whether nanotechnology can increase coconut yields and improve overall tree health. Under the project, coconut trees will be injected with capsules containing nutrients and crop protection substances — a method designed to make absorption more efficient while requiring only small quantities of nutrient solution.
Mitsui, one of Japan's largest trading conglomerates with diversified interests spanning chemicals, energy, and food agriculture, will contribute its proprietary nano-formulated nutrient technology. The PCA will be responsible for identifying trial sites and providing technical support throughout the duration of the study.
The Philippines is the world's second-largest producer of coconuts after Indonesia, and the crop supports the livelihoods of roughly 3.5 million Filipino farmers. However, the industry has grappled with long-standing productivity challenges, including a large share of aging trees past their peak yielding years and periodic damage from typhoons and pest outbreaks such as the coconut scale insect known locally as cocolisap. The PCA, an agency under the Department of Agriculture, is tasked with developing and implementing policies to advance the coconut industry.
PCA Administrator and Chief Executive Officer Dexter R. Buted said the partnership could transform coconut farming in the Philippines by improving productivity, strengthening tree health, and making farms more resilient.
"If the technology proves effective, it can help our coconut farmers produce more with fewer inputs while making the industry more globally competitive," Mr. Buted said in a statement issued by the Department of Agriculture.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. said a healthier and more productive coconut industry would raise incomes in rural communities and boost export earnings.
