  • The expansion coincides with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) phasing in through 2024, which introduces a bloc-wide licensing regime for crypto-asset service providers.
Paybis Expands Global Crypto Payment Methods to More Than 20

Paybis, a global crypto exchange and B2B payment infrastructure provider, said it has added a new set of local payment methods to its exchange, extending coverage across Europe, Latin America, and Africa as demand grows for compliant crypto exchanges with broad local payment support.

Over the past two years, the company has steadily expanded region-specific payment options, including Brazil's instant-payment system PIX, Kenya's mobile money network M-Pesa, Chile's Webpay, and Poland's BLIK. Several of those rails sit at the center of everyday payments in their home markets: PIX was launched by Brazil's central bank in 2020 and has become one of the country's most-used ways to pay, while M-Pesa, introduced by Safaricom in 2007, is one of Kenya's most widely used payment services. The company said the goal is to make crypto purchases easier regardless of where a customer is located.

The latest addition is MB WAY, a mobile payment method used by more than 5 million people in Portugal and supported by roughly 95% of the country's banks. MB WAY is operated by SIBS, the interbank network behind Portugal's Multibanco payment scheme. With the integration, customers can confirm a crypto purchase using the same phone number and PIN they already use for everyday payments, without entering card details or waiting for a bank transfer.

The company described the move as part of a broader approach focused on adding local payment rails rather than requiring users to rely on a limited number of international options.

The MB WAY integration also arrives alongside a wider set of upgrades for both individual and business customers, including faster identity verification and broader currency coverage. Paybis now supports more than 20 local and international payment methods, including PIX, FPS, BLIK, M-Pesa, Webpay, SPEI and MB WAY, as well as over 90 cryptocurrencies across more than 70 fiat currencies. Many of those rails are domestic instant-payment systems: SPEI, for example, is Mexico's real-time interbank network operated by Banco de Mexico. In Europe, the compliance dimension of that demand has also grown more concrete, with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) phasing in through 2024 and introducing a bloc-wide licensing regime for crypto-asset service providers.

"Every region has its own habits around money: a phone number and a PIN in Portugal, a QR code in Brazil, a mobile wallet in Kenya," Paul Afshar, Paybis Growth Lead, said. "Our philosophy is making crypto easy – each new local payment method we add is one more reason for someone to buy, sell or swap crypto with Paybis."
