Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton encountered a turbulent campaign stop in Houston on Saturday, as hecklers disrupted his Senate campaign event with personal accusations while members of his own party voiced growing frustration over what they described as a lackluster campaign effort.

Paxton, who has served as Texas attorney general since 2015 and was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 before being acquitted by the Texas Senate later that year, is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. His Democratic opponent in the race is state Rep. James Talarico. The contest is drawing national attention as a marquee Senate race in a state where no Democrat has won statewide office since 1994, meaning the Republican primary contest often functions as the decisive electoral battleground.

During the Houston appearance, Paxton attempted to make a joke about Talarico's Christian values, only to be met with a sharp retort from an attendee. "You cheated on your wife!" the heckler shouted, according to Texas reporter James Barragán.

Allegations of adultery against Paxton have circulated for years and were raised during his 2023 impeachment proceedings before the Texas Senate. In July, his wife, Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton, announced that she was filing for divorce "on biblical grounds."

The heckling was not limited to questions about Paxton's personal life. Austin Statesman reporter Faith Bugenhagen shared video on X showing another attendee appearing to shout Jeffrey Epstein's name while being escorted away from the event.

The reference connects to an attack Talarico leveled last month, when the state representative accused Paxton of attempting to cover up what he called an "Epstein-style sweetheart deal." According to Talarico, the Attorney General's office had arranged a plea agreement for a Waco man charged with sexually abusing a child, resulting in a sentence of just 29 days in jail.

On the same day as the Houston event, the Houston Chronicle published a report detailing complaints from within the GOP that Paxton's campaign was falling short. The paper quoted Fox News host Jesse Watters expressing frustration with the candidate's visibility.

"Where's Paxton?" Watters said. "I've seen Mitch McConnell more than Paxton and McConnell's been in the hospital all summer. Get out of your hole Paxton and do something."

Such complaints from prominent conservative voices carry particular weight in a primary race where Republican voter turnout will likely determine the outcome, and where Paxton's history of legal and personal controversy has already made him a polarizing figure even within his own party.
