Following a thorough infrastructure assessment, Nethermind has moved its cross-chain operations from LayerZero to Chainlink. The blockchain technology firm will now run Chainlink nodes that support the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) and the platform's established Data Feeds, the aggregated market data streams that many DeFi lending and trading protocols rely on for pricing. The strategic shift bolsters Chainlink's infrastructure capabilities as traditional financial entities increasingly adopt public blockchain technology, a trend Chainlink has cultivated through pilots with institutions including Swift and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC).

Node Operator and Strategic Technology Partner

Under the new partnership, Nethermind assumes dual responsibilities as a Chainlink node operator and strategic technology collaborator. The organization will deliver infrastructure solutions, development resources, and integration assistance for projects constructing blockchain-based applications, and its cross-chain capabilities will now center on Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, commonly referred to as CCIP.

CCIP enables asset transfers and communication between distinct blockchain ecosystems through Chainlink's distributed infrastructure framework. The platform employs autonomous node operators alongside risk management mechanisms to oversee cross-chain activity throughout its supported networks. Nethermind will leverage its established blockchain development proficiency to enhance the infrastructure powering these solutions.

Previously, the firm maintained decentralized verifier infrastructure within LayerZero's cross-chain communication framework, where applications choose the decentralized verifier networks responsible for validating messages transferred between blockchains. LayerZero, whose mainnet launched in 2023, has been among the most widely used cross-chain messaging protocols. Nethermind has now terminated those verifier responsibilities and redirected its cross-chain infrastructure efforts toward Chainlink.

Cross-Chain Security Developments Provide Backdrop

The transition occurs amid notable cross-chain infrastructure developments involving both LayerZero and Chainlink throughout 2026. In April, malicious actors compromised Kelp DAO's LayerZero-based bridge and extracted approximately $290 million worth of rsETH. The breach involved a fraudulent cross-chain communication and a setup dependent on a single verifier. Cross-chain bridges have historically ranked among the industry's most attacked surfaces; the Ronin and Wormhole breaches of 2022 each produced losses exceeding $300 million.

Kelp DAO subsequently migrated rsETH cross-chain infrastructure to Chainlink while contesting LayerZero's characterization of its security setup. LayerZero disputed those assertions, claiming the project had transitioned from multiple verifiers to a single-verifier configuration. Following this, LayerZero implemented more stringent guidelines for applications utilizing its decentralized verifier network framework.

Nethermind, however, has not explicitly connected its strategic decision to the Kelp DAO breach or other LayerZero security incidents. The company's official statement characterized the transition as the outcome of comprehensive evaluation and strategic infrastructure planning. Additionally, Nethermind did not disclose the specific technical benchmarks employed when evaluating Chainlink versus LayerZero during the assessment process.

Chainlink Strengthens Its Position in the Cross-Chain Market

Several prominent institutions have similarly shifted their cross-chain operations to Chainlink in recent periods. BitGo designated CCIP as the sole cross-chain infrastructure solution for Wrapped Bitcoin after formerly utilizing LayerZero. Meanwhile, Aave broadened its CCIP implementation to encompass deposits, withdrawals, vault optimization, and additional cross-chain asset operations.

The Wyoming Stable Token Commission finalized another LayerZero-to-Chainlink transition on August 18 following a state-mandated security evaluation, selecting CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain provider for its Frontier Stable Token initiative. Nonetheless, Wyoming has not released comprehensive technical conclusions from its infrastructure analysis. As with Wyoming's review, the technical criteria behind Nethermind's evaluation remain undisclosed, leaving outside observers to weigh such migration decisions largely on the reputations of the institutions conducting them.

Nethermind contributes substantial Ethereum infrastructure knowledge to Chainlink's expanding network of independent node operators. Established in 2017, the firm develops an Ethereum execution client, one of the leading clients powering nodes on the network today, while offering security audits, research services, and enterprise blockchain solutions. The new partnership extends those capabilities into oracle infrastructure and cross-chain platforms facilitating institutional blockchain integration.
