South Korea’s Mirae Asset Financial Group has completed its acquisition of cryptocurrency exchange Korbit, becoming the first financial group in the country to acquire a domestic crypto trading platform.
The group completed the deal through its affiliate, Mirae Asset Consulting, raising its ownership stake in Korbit to 92.06%. Mirae Asset has also submitted a revised regulatory filing to increase that stake further to 97.15%.
Mirae Asset Takes Control of Korbit
The acquisition gives Mirae Asset control of Korbit, one of South Korea’s licensed cryptocurrency exchanges. The transaction increases Mirae Asset’s cumulative investment in the exchange from 133.5 billion won to 141.4 billion won.
South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission approved the acquisition earlier this month after determining that the deal was unlikely to reduce market competition. Korbit held a 0.5% share of South Korea’s cryptocurrency market as of 2025.
The approval comes in a market where crypto exchanges operate under domestic compliance requirements, including anti-money laundering rules and real-name account arrangements with banks for Korean won trading. That regulatory backdrop makes direct ownership by a major financial group notable, even as Korbit remains a smaller player by market share.
Strategy to Build a Global Investment Platform
Mirae Asset said the acquisition forms part of its mid- to long-term strategy. The financial group plans to use Korbit as a foundation for developing a global investment platform that connects digital assets with traditional finance.
Park Hyeon-joo, founder of Mirae Asset Financial Group, said Korbit will relaunch as Digital X under the group’s Mirae Asset 3.0 vision.
“Digital X will serve as the most powerful engine for realizing Mirae Asset 3.0.”
Korbit told existing users that its services will remain unchanged following the acquisition. The exchange said user deposits and virtual assets will continue to be held and managed separately, and that there will be no changes to how the platform is used or processed.
“Building on Mirae Asset’s stability and financial expertise, we will further strengthen user protection and service competitiveness and continue to grow as a trusted digital asset platform.”
According to CoinGecko data cited in the report, Korbit is South Korea’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, with about $4.3 million recorded over the past 24 hours. Upbit, the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, processed more than $224 million over the same period.
