Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) office has released another photo and statement in response to ongoing conspiracy theories suggesting that the former Republican leader is dead.

Two weeks earlier, McConnell's office released a photo of the former GOP Senate leader sitting in a hospital room chair next to his wife, former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, while pointing to the sports section of The Washington Post. The image only fueled more speculation and even prompted late-night host John Oliver to joke on his Sunday night show about whether McConnell was really alive.

In June, a 911 call was confirmed to have been made for McConnell. The call said he was in “cardiac arrest” and that CPR was being administered until EMS arrived. The episode also led to a series of unusual developments that drew attention.

After the incident, Chao traveled to China just days after McConnell was hospitalized. When she returned, she was photographed by people outside the hospital wearing a long trench coat and a mask in 95-degree heat.

In the new photo, McConnell appears to be sitting in another hospital chair with pillows behind him and Chao beside him.

Punchbowl's Andrew Desiderio cited a McConnell statement saying he is “keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders.” The Office of the Attending Physician told Desiderio that McConnell has been “discharge[d] from hospital care” but is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.” The office said the physical therapy is “designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” underscoring that the recent updates are focused on his recovery rather than a return to public events.

According to McConnell's office, he suffered a fall in early June but did not break anything or suffer a concussion. He has nevertheless been in the hospital for more than a month.

McConnell also said he will not attend the "Fancy Farm" event in Kentucky on Saturday. “There's no place I'd rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky feasting on pork and mutton,” he said.

This year's picnic is the 146th edition and the largest in the state, according to The Courier-Journal.

McConnell said he first attended 42 years ago, when there were not many Republicans in western Kentucky. He said it is now a “sea of red.”

“So, I hate that I'll miss the fun this year, but I'm sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic,” McConnell said. “As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”
