Maye Musk said her son, Elon Musk, genuinely wants to live on Mars in the coming decades, reiterating the SpaceX founder’s long-standing plans for the planet.

Speaking with Brian Sozzi on the Power Players podcast, Maye Musk said, “I think he really would like to live in the city of Mars.” She was promoting her memoir, Timeless: The Art of Reinvention and Resilience at Any Age, which recounts her life, including raising Elon, Kimball, and Tosca as a single mother after leaving an abusive marriage.

Musk’s Mars ambitions have been public for years. In a 2018 interview with Axios on HBO, he said he believed there was a 70% chance that he would personally travel to Mars.

He also emphasized the dangers involved. “Your probability of dying on Mars is much higher than on Earth,” Musk said. “It’s gonna be hard. There’s a good chance of death, going in a little can through deep space.”

Musk has rejected the characterization of Mars colonization as an “escape hatch for rich people.” He has said that people who reach Mars would face demanding physical work to construct a settlement and survive in a hostile environment. “Once you land successfully, you’ll be working nonstop to build the base,” he said.

Tickets to Mars are expected to cost around a few hundred thousand dollars per person. That price would put the journey beyond the reach of most people, although Musk has said the long-term goal is to make it more affordable.

SpaceX’s Starship is the vehicle intended to carry humans to Mars. The rocket was previously known as the BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket. SpaceX continues to develop Starship for future Mars missions, but no confirmed crewed launch date has been set. Until a crewed date is set, the Mars timeline remains a stated goal rather than a scheduled flight, which makes Starship’s development progress the main indicator for anyone tracking the plan.

As described, the package would tie Musk’s payout to a colonization milestone rather than a financial one, placing SpaceX’s leadership rewards behind the same goal Maye Musk described.

Tesla shares were up around 3% on the day the interview resurfaced in coverage. SpaceX remains a private company, and its shares are not publicly traded in the traditional sense. Musk is Tesla’s chief executive, which makes Tesla the only one of the two companies whose shares public-market investors can buy.

Maye Musk has also defended her son on X. “If somebody’s insulting them when they’re doing good, you would come down on them like crazy,” she said.

Maye Musk has developed a high-profile career of her own. She became a CoverGirl ambassador at 69 and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit at 74.

Her comments about Elon Musk’s Mars plans are consistent with statements he has made publicly over the years. He initially announced plans to reach Mars by 2022 — a target that has since passed — and later revised that timeline.
