Kroger has shut down at least three dozen stores since announcing plans last year to close 60 locations that were not "delivering sustainable results" by the end of 2026.

The Cincinnati-based grocery retailer has not published a comprehensive list of the stores or banners slated for closure. However, online searches identified 39 locations across nine banners that are no longer operating, and local media reports have confirmed that many of these closures are part of the broader restructuring.

The closures follow Kroger's failed $24.6 billion merger with Albertsons, which was blocked by federal judges in Oregon and Washington in December 2024 on antitrust grounds. The abandoned deal left Kroger without the expanded scale it had sought to compete more aggressively against Walmart, the largest U.S. grocer, and growing pressure from discount chains such as Aldi and Lidl.

As of January 2026, Kroger operated 2,697 supermarkets across 35 states under approximately 20 banners, including Fred Meyer, Fry's Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, Mariano's, Pick 'n Save, QFC, and Ralphs, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The company stated that the closures are designed to help it "run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business," according to FOX 26 Houston, which reported that two Houston-area locations were scheduled to close in April.

The closures coincide with Kroger's announcement last month that it intends to acquire regional grocery chain Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion. The deal would add 197 supermarkets and 11 standalone pharmacies across northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, and is expected to strengthen Kroger's footprint in several Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic markets — a more targeted expansion path than the nationwide combination with Albertsons would have produced.

At least three of the impacted locations have been or are expected to be replaced by Kroger Marketplace stores as part of the company's consolidation efforts. Kroger Marketplace stores are larger-format locations offering an expanded selection of non-grocery merchandise, including clothing, toys, home goods, and furniture.
