J.P. Morgan Forecasts 10% Annual Bitcoin Return, but Bear Case Falls to $25,000
Key Takeaways
- •J.P. Morgan Asset Management's 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, released October 19, assigned Bitcoin its first-ever numerical forecast in the report's 31-year history: a 10% annual compound return over the next decade.
- •Bitcoin's projected return tops the report's comparison table, exceeding U.S. REITs at 8.2%, large-cap stocks at 7.5%, aggregate bonds at 5.6%, gold at 5.5%, and cash at 3.2%.
- •The report's scenarios span a bull case of 16.6% and a bear case of negative 11.2% annually, implying Bitcoin prices of roughly $386,000, $215,000, or $25,000 by 2036 from a September 30 starting price of $83,000, with expected annual volatility of 55%.
- •J.P. Morgan describes Bitcoin as a speculative asset and hedge against monetary easing, says it is premature to create a 10-year forecast for it, and notes an alternative network-adoption framework producing a negative 3.2% annual base-case return.
- •Bitcoin traded at $83,025, up 1.99% over 24 hours, as U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $23.2 million in net Tuesday inflows and Lookonchain tracked 1,090 BTC worth $90.38 million moving from Wintermute into three newly created wallets.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management has projected a 10% annual compound return for Bitcoin over the next decade in its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, published Monday, October 19. It is the first time the 31-year-old report has assigned a numerical forecast to BTC USD.
The forecast is a long-term capital-market assumption describing an annualized outcome over a 10-year horizon, rather than a projection of Bitcoin’s price path in any individual year.
The bank’s base case places Bitcoin ahead of U.S. stocks, bonds and gold over the next 10 years. Michael Saylor described the projection as Wall Street “doing the math” in a post on X:

Bitcoin was trading at $83,025, up 1.99% over 24 hours, as U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded a second consecutive day of inflows. Lookonchain also reported that $90.38 million worth of BTC had moved into newly created wallets.
Bitcoin Tops J.P. Morgan’s Return Table
J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s base case calls for Bitcoin to generate a 10% compound return annually for 10 years, the highest projected return in the report’s comparison table. The forecast exceeds projections for U.S. REITs at 8.2%, U.S. large-cap stocks at 7.5%, U.S. aggregate bonds at 5.6%, gold at 5.5% and cash at 3.2%.
The report also presents a bull case of 16.6% annually and a bear case of negative 11.2% annually. All three scenarios begin with a Bitcoin spot price of $83,000 on September 30. Compounded through 2036, the figures imply approximately:
- Base case: $215,000 per BTC
- Bull case: $386,000 per BTC
- Bear case: $25,000 per BTC
The wide range reflects expected annual volatility of 55%, more than three times gold’s projected volatility of 17.2%. It also explains why the arithmetic average return of 20.9% is substantially higher than the 10% return investors would actually compound under the base case.
J.P. Morgan’s report describes Bitcoin as “a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing.” The authors also write that it is “premature to create a 10-year forecast for bitcoin.” Bitcoin remains outside the bank’s main portfolio models because its correlations with other assets continue to change.
Among the report’s three analytical frameworks, the one based on network adoption produces a base-case return of negative 3.2% annually. Thus, while Bitcoin ranks first in the return table under the bank’s main assumptions, J.P. Morgan’s analysis also cautions against using the projection as a basis for building a portfolio around the asset at this stage.

ETF Flows and Wintermute Transfers
SoSoValue data showed that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $23.2 million in net inflows on Tuesday. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for $29.9 million of those inflows, following $526.6 million in inflows on Monday. Despite the recent activity, the group remained approximately $67 million in the red for October.

Lookonchain reported the movement of 1,090 BTC, valued at $90.38 million, from market maker Wintermute to three newly created wallets early Wednesday:

The receiving wallets were newly created, and the identities of their owners were not disclosed. Transfers from a market maker into fresh wallets can be associated with an over-the-counter buyer taking delivery, although the wallet activity alone does not identify the buyer.
Bitcoin Faces Resistance Above $83,000
Bitcoin had moved above $83,000, but the immediate technical test was whether it could close a daily candle above that level. The cryptocurrency had not finished a day above the relevant swing high since October 12, despite reaching intraday highs of $83,168 on October 18 and $83,249 on October 21.
The levels identified on the daily chart were:
- Resistance: $83,249, the high recorded on October 21
- Next major swing high: $87,220
- First support: $82,563, a nearby swing low
- Lower support: $80,394 to $80,765, a range containing a swing low and the 50-day exponential moving average (EMA)
A daily close above $83,249, combined with continued ETF inflows, would place $87,220 among the next levels being monitored. If Bitcoin remained between $80,394 and $83,249, the price could continue trading within that range ahead of the following week’s Federal Reserve meeting. A break below $80,394 would bring the 200-day EMA at $76,108 into focus.
J.P. Morgan’s base case assumes that Bitcoin compounds at 10% annually from the stated starting price. In the near term, however, the market was still facing the technical requirement of a daily close above $83,249.
