Coffee was a major driver of growth for The J.M. Smucker Company in the first quarter of its 2027 financial year, according to the branded food and beverage company's latest results.

The company reported net sales growth of 5 per cent year-on-year to US$2.2 billion, highlighting higher coffee pricing and stronger coffee volumes as key contributors. Overall sales growth was driven by a 4 percentage point increase from pricing, "primarily driven by higher net pricing for coffee", while volume/mix also benefited from growth in coffee sales.

United States (US) Retail Coffee was the company's strongest major segment. Net sales increased 13 per cent to US$807.8 million, segment profit surged 124 per cent to US$300 million, and profit margin expanded to 37.1 per cent. Coffee volume growth was led by the company's Dunkin' and Café Bustelo packaged coffee brands.

"Our first quarter results exceeded our expectations for both net sales and adjusted earnings per share, demonstrating continued momentum across the company," says Mark Smucker, CEO, President, and Chair of the Board of J.M. Smucker.

"Our performance reflects the strength of our differentiated portfolio, disciplined execution against our strategic priorities, and the investments we continue to make in our brands and capabilities."

J.M. Smucker is one of the largest coffee roasters and packaged coffee suppliers in the US, making the coffee business an important part of its broader mix alongside other household brands. The owner of Folgers and Café Bustelo, it also operates the licensed packaged coffee business for Dunkin'.

Headquartered in Orrville, Ohio, J.M. Smucker is also widely known for products such as Smucker's fruit spreads, Jif peanut butter, and Uncrustables sandwiches. The company's shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SJM, and its financial year ends on 30 April, placing the first quarter of fiscal 2027 in the May-to-July period.
