The smartphone expands through two folding points to create a tablet-sized display and operates on Huawei's newly developed Kirin 9050 Pro processor. The entry-level model carries a price tag of 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,980), while the premium configuration reaches 24,999 yuan ($3,725). Consumer purchases will commence on September 12.

According to Huawei Executive Director Richard Yu, the development faced significant financial challenges due to escalating memory component prices and the integration of cutting-edge technology. Memory component costs have risen industry-wide as suppliers redirect capacity toward data-center and AI-related demand, a pressure point that affects handset makers across the board.

The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first high-performance processor to utilize Huawei's "LogicFolding" architecture. The design vertically arranges logic components in stacked layers inside a unified chip, reducing signal transmission distances, minimizing delays, and enhancing operational efficiency. Huawei positions this advancement as an application of its "Tau Scaling Law" philosophy, unveiled in May as a strategy to circumvent U.S. sanctions limiting access to sophisticated semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Chips stacked in vertical layers can deliver higher performance within a given footprint, an approach Huawei has pursued as restrictions block it from leading-edge fabrication processes.

Beyond the processor, the Mate XT2 introduces an enhanced hinge system, superior water protection, a privacy display mode, and improved photography hardware. The company claims a 42% performance boost compared to the original model.

Foldable Smartphone Rivalry Intensifies

Xiaomi scheduled its own foldable device announcement for later Monday. Following Huawei's presentation, Xiaomi's stock declined 3% during afternoon market hours.

Apple's product event on Wednesday is widely anticipated to showcase the company's newest iPhone generation, with industry observers predicting the introduction of a foldable variant. Should Apple enter the category, it would mark the first time all three of the top vendors in China's smartphone market compete directly in foldables, a segment that has so far remained a niche within the broader smartphone market.

Samsung, which currently holds the global leadership position in foldable phone sales, introduced a tri-fold device in December but allegedly discontinued it after a mere three-month run. The Korean manufacturer refreshed its foldable portfolio in July with a compact passport-format option.

Huawei's Chinese Market Dominance

According to IDC research, Huawei controls the largest portion of China's overall smartphone sector with 22.6% market share in Q2 2026. Apple captures second place at 18.1%, while Xiaomi secures 12.4%.

Within the foldable category specifically, Huawei's position is considerably stronger. Smart Analytics Global data shows the manufacturer represented 68% of Chinese foldable phone shipments throughout Q2.

U.S. markets remain closed to Huawei products, as American authorities continue designating the company as a threat to national security.

The Mate XT2 introduction represents Huawei's first major Kirin processor announcement at a premier product event since the Mate 40 series debuted six years earlier.
