Google Commits $40 Million in AI Tokens and Cloud Credits to DOE Genesis Mission

Google said it is committing $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to support researchers participating in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, expanding its earlier pledge to back the White House initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence to double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade.

The announcement was made at the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026. Google said the commitment is intended to help scientists address research challenges involving large-scale and complex systems, including fusion plasma dynamics, the search for new materials and the analysis of exabytes of data generated by advanced experimental facilities. Those workloads are central to the DOE National Laboratory system, which supports U.S. energy, national security and basic science missions and operates major scientific user facilities used by researchers from universities, industry and government.

Google previously announced its support for the White House’s Genesis Mission in December. Since then, Google DeepMind said it launched an early access program providing AI-for-science tools to all 17 DOE National Laboratories, while Google Public Sector described how Gemini for Government could serve as an AI backbone for the DOE.

Under the expanded commitment, Google said DOE Genesis Mission awardees will first receive in-kind access to Google DeepMind’s frontier AI-for-science portfolio. The tools include AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding and discovery agent used to design advanced algorithms; AlphaFold 3, a model for predicting the structure and interactions of proteins and other biomolecules; and AlphaGenome, a tool for studying how DNA variation, including variation in the non-coding genome, shapes biology and disease.

The portfolio also includes WeatherNext, a family of AI weather forecasting models for mapping weather conditions, and AlphaEarth Foundations, a foundational AI model designed to map and analyze the planet in greater detail. By spanning coding, biology, climate and Earth observation, the package reflects how the Genesis Mission is being framed as a cross-disciplinary effort rather than a single-domain research program.

Google said it will also provide Gemini for Government seats and tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users across DOE National Laboratories’ operations, research and management teams. According to the company, the secure platform is intended to support work ranging from laboratory research to the administration of specialized user facilities that serve the broader scientific community, providing a single foundation for DOE mission needs.

Google said early examples of the Genesis Mission’s practical impact are emerging across the laboratory ecosystem, while noting that further work remains.

At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to map large mathematical systems that are too complex for researchers to examine manually. Google said the AI system automatically identifies hidden connections, accelerating discoveries that would otherwise take researchers years to find.

“Modern math relies on abstraction, but combinatorics offers concrete models that make complex geometry and algebra easier to grasp. We’ve found that systems like AlphaEvolve are perfect for this search,” said Dr. Kvinge. “By leveraging the broad mathematical knowledge of LLMs, we can automate the exploration of countless angles. We’re still experimenting, but the discoveries are already shaping our future research.”

At the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), researchers are using Gemini to change how they interact with physical laboratory hardware. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon, a senior materials data scientist at NLR, leads a program focused on autonomous materials discovery.

“Our collaboration has allowed us to build an autonomous experimentation capability,” said Dr. Spurgeon. “By deploying Gemini in our instruments, we cut microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to about 13 minutes (eight times faster) and reduced the manual steps needed to focus an image from as many as 50 down to two. That's time and attention we've given back to the science itself, enabling genuinely autonomous workflows that observe, reason, and decide in real time. This has helped us explore parts of the material design space we simply could not have reached through manual operation alone.”

Google described the Genesis Mission as an opportunity to transform research and science across the United States. The company said that by providing access to advanced AI tools, it aims to help scientists accelerate breakthroughs across energy, security and scientific challenges.
