Gillian Anderson invests in women's football multi-club ownership group Crux Football

Sex Education star Gillian Anderson has invested in Crux Football, a multi-club ownership group focused on women's football.

The former X-Files actress joins an investor group that owns French club Montpellier and holds a stake in Swedish side FC Rosengard. The organisation teased Anderson's involvement on Instagram.

Crux Football is a Europe-based multi-club ownership vehicle for women's football, comparable to Mercury 13 and the portfolio of Michele Kang. The multi-club model — already well established on the men's side of the sport — allows ownership groups to share scouting, commercial and operational resources across clubs in different countries, an approach Crux is applying to the women's game. The organisation, founded by former footballer Bex Smith, counts former Brentford head of recruitment Ted Knutson and former US player Julie Foudy among its leadership. Former Netflix executive Cindy Holland, ex-Visa marketing executive Adrian Farina, and former Scotland international Jen Beattie are also involved.

The Crux Football stake joins soft drink brand G Spot in Anderson's investment portfolio.

"Today is a significant milestone for Crux Football as we welcome the incredible Gillian Anderson as one of our investors," the organisation said. "From the beginning, we set out to build a community of investors who bring diverse experiences, perspectives, and a genuine desire to make women's football and people's lives better.

"In every conversation, Gillian shared a deep commitment to amplifying the voices of women and girls and a strong belief in the power of storytelling to change perceptions. She understands that giving players a platform is fundamental to growing the game.

"We're incredibly proud to welcome her to the Crux family and excited about the impact we'll create together for our players, clubs, fans, and the future of women's football."

Anderson's newest investment

Investment interest in women's football has been growing, led by Kang and figures such as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the husband of Serena Williams.

Ohanian purchased a 10 per cent stake in Women's Super League side Chelsea for £20m in 2025, valuing the club at £200m. He has since said he believes the London club could become the world's first $1bn football team.

Former US players Abby Wambach, Ali Krieger and Leslie Osborne, along with US basketball player Sue Bird, are also Crux Football investors.

Montpellier have won the French domestic league twice, in 2004 and 2005, and have claimed three Coupe de France trophies, most recently in 2009. FC Rosengard, meanwhile, have won the Swedish Damallsvenskan 14 times — including in 2021, 2022 and 2024 — and have lifted the domestic cup five times. The pedigree of both clubs underlines the competitive standing of the portfolio Crux has assembled, and how the group deploys investment across its clubs will be a measure of whether the multi-club model can take hold in the women's game as it has in the men's.
