Ethena's Gold Collateral Plan Faces a Weekend Exit Test

Key Takeaways

  • •Ethena's plan to use Ethereum-based Tether Gold (XAUT) as institutional lending collateral is contingent on a weekend sale test whose results remain unpublished, with custody arrangements and sale venues still unconfirmed.
  • •Institutional loans under the framework would be over-collateralized stablecoin loans held in segregated tri-party custody, but default recovery depends on enforcing the loan and selling collateral rather than automatic onchain liquidation.
  • •Redeeming XAUT with Tether is the slowest exit route, limited to verified customers, requiring several business days and full bullion bars of roughly 400 tokens delivered in Switzerland, with Tether under no obligation to buy back tokens or bullion.
  • •Although CME's 1-ounce gold futures trade around the clock, weekend trades are cleared and settled on the next business day, so a weekend gold price does not ensure pledged XAUT can be sold and a loan repaid before Monday.
  • •The framework bars Ethena's own assets—USDe, sUSDe, ENA, and USDtb—from serving as collateral, keeping the protocol from lending against tokens likely to lose value when its protection is most needed.
Ethena's Gold Collateral Plan Faces a Weekend Exit Test

Ethena's plan to accept tokenized gold as collateral for institutional lending now hinges on a weekend sale test whose results have yet to be published. According to an October 29 post by Kairos Research on the Ethena governance forum, the proposed asset is Ethereum-based Tether Gold (XAUT), with its custody arrangements and the collateral manager's sale venues still to be confirmed. The thread contains no test results and no confirmation that the framework is currently in force.

Why collateral recovery matters to USDe holders

Ethena's institutional lending documentation describes loans of stable assets to institutional borrowers, backed by collateral worth more than the loan and held under qualified custody or tri-party arrangements. The program is part of Ethena's push beyond crypto basis trades, and it adds a different kind of risk: the protocol is only protected if it can actually enforce a loan and sell the collateral.

That is where reported value and recoverable value part ways. Gold backing tells a lender what XAUT represents. In a default, what counts is how quickly the lender can take control, find a buyer for the full amount, and turn the result into money it can use, before price moves and trading costs eat into the cushion. Taking XAUT as security also would not make USDe a claim on gold; holders would still be relying on the loan being repaid or the collateral being sold.

A Saturday default, step by step

The framework describes institutional loans with segregated tri-party custody, not an automatic onchain liquidation. Every step of a recovery depends on people and contracts — a hypothetical sequence for illustration, not a reported Ethena liquidation.

The first step is the one most often underestimated. LlamaRisk's review criteria for Ethena's loan agreements check whether liquidation depends on the borrower's cooperation, a court process, or notice periods that a falling market could outrun. The terms of any XAUT agreement have not been published.

Three ways out of XAUT

Three exit routes exist for a XAUT position:

  • Sell the token — gives sale proceeds from a buyer; needs demand at size, custody access, and settlement.
  • Redeem with Tether — gives physical bars, or cash from a bullion sale; needs verification, bar-sized amounts, and business days.
  • Hedge the gold price — gives protection against the gold price falling; needs market access, margin, and a matching contract.

Redemption is the slowest of the three. Tether Gold's legal terms limit it to verified customers and allow several business days. Physical redemption is in full bullion bars delivered in Switzerland, and since each XAUT represents one troy ounce while a standard bar holds roughly 400 ounces, redeeming for metal starts at about 400 tokens. The alternative is a facilitated sale of the bullion, paid out by fiat wire if it succeeds. The terms also say Tether has no obligation to buy back tokens or bullion.

None of that binds a sale on the secondary market, which is why the test focuses there. The settlement asset still matters: proceeds in a stablecoin could skip the wait for a wire but carry their own issuer and custody risk — the same gap between moving a token and having usable collateral that clearing markets face.

Gold trades on weekends; settlement does not

Closed gold markets are not the problem. CME's 1-ounce gold futures trade around the clock, seven days a week, apart from maintenance windows. Its July trading notice shows the catch: weekend trades are cleared, settled, and reported on the next business day. A weekend gold price, or even a weekend hedge, does not on its own mean pledged XAUT can be sold and the loan repaid before Monday. CME is not named as an Ethena venue.

How to read the test when it comes

The framework sets no test size or pass mark. In practical terms, the test would need to show not just that XAUT can change hands, but that collateral can move through custody, sale, and settlement quickly enough to support a loan recovery. The measures that would make a result meaningful are all unpublished:

  • Who triggered the sale — without the borrower's help. Not published.
  • Time to release — from custody instruction to tradable. Not published.
  • Amount actually sold — not just quoted or moved. Not published.
  • Net recovery — after spreads, slippage, and fees. Not published.
  • Usable proceeds — when, and the backup route. Not published.

Size is the trap to watch for. A small sale that clears smoothly on a quiet weekend proves a route works at that size and moment, not that a large position could be liquidated in a falling market.

The rest of the framework

Beyond gold, the post lets the trading team onboard qualifying borrowers, with advance notice to the risk committee and escalation for exceptions. It requires segregated collateral and verifiable daily reporting, while loan-to-value limits sit on separate rate cards shared with the committee monthly. A daily report shows where a position stands once a day; it is not the same as round-the-clock monitoring or the ability to act at 3 a.m. on a Sunday.

The framework also bars USDe, sUSDe, ENA, and USDtb as collateral. All four are Ethena's own assets, which would likely lose value at exactly the moment Ethena most needed its collateral to hold up. Excluding them keeps the protocol from lending against its own risk.
