On September 14, xAI CEO Elon Musk said the company’s forthcoming Grok 5 model would be its first to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), making a notable claim in the competition among leading AI developers.

The announcement came in a series of posts on X and prompted discussion among AI researchers and in financial markets.

AGI generally refers to AI systems capable of performing at or above human levels across a broad range of cognitive tasks, unlike narrow AI systems designed for specific applications. The feasibility of Grok 5 achieving true AGI remains speculative, as no organization has demonstrated human-equivalent performance across the full spectrum of cognitive tasks. For that reason, the most relevant indicators will be evidence of Grok 5’s performance across a broad range of tasks and evaluations, rather than the AGI label alone.

xAI’s Development Timeline

Musk said Grok 4.8 was nearing completion of its foundational training phase within days, with training expected to conclude this week. The model has 2.5 trillion parameters and runs on an entirely new proprietary C++ framework developed internally at xAI.

After the initial training phase is completed, Grok 4.8 will enter reinforcement learning, in which iterative feedback mechanisms are used to refine the model’s performance.

When asked whether Grok 4.8 was approaching AGI-level capabilities, Musk responded: “That will be Grok 5.”

Musk also described xAI’s competitive position. He said Grok 4.7’s overall capabilities were comparable to Anthropic’s Opus 5.0, while noting that the systems showed advantages in different domains. He said Grok 4.9 was aimed at performance levels associated with Astra or Fable.

Discussing the planned Grok 5, Musk said: “Maybe better than anything. We shall see.”

The company has accelerated development by using substantial computational resources, incorporating live data streams from X, and applying engineering expertise from SpaceX operations.

AI Safety Debate and Semiconductor Stocks

Musk’s AGI projection came on the same day that he endorsed statements from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman calling for a more measured approach to AI development. The combination drew scrutiny because Musk was promoting rapid progress toward AGI while also amplifying warnings about the risks associated with advanced AI.

The safety debate coincided with declines in major AI semiconductor stocks. Nvidia shares fell 3.46%, while AMD dropped 6.24%, as investors reassessed demand projections for chips optimized for AI workloads.

Industry observers have identified several potential risks, including misalignment between AI objectives and human interests, excessive market concentration among leading AI developers, and the unpredictable emergence of new capabilities.

Musk has repeatedly said that advanced AI systems could significantly accelerate global productivity within years, affecting fields ranging from software engineering to robotics and fundamental research. However, xAI’s rapid progress against established competitors does not establish that Grok 5 will meet the requirements for AGI.

Grok 4.8’s training is scheduled to conclude this week, after which xAI plans to begin reinforcement learning protocols.
