Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to be “unmasked” in a forthcoming documentary simply titled “Musk,” and the billionaire Trump ally was said Thursday to be “freaking out” over its impending release.

Musk played an outsized role in the 2024 presidential election, contributing more than $259 million to support President Donald Trump’s campaign. He also had access to an unprecedented amount of data on American citizens while leading the short-lived Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

Written and directed by documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, “Musk” is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on Oct. 16. A preview of the film published this week by The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the documentary may expose the billionaire as “among the most dangerous” men “on earth.”

Gibney is one of the most prominent documentary directors working today, with a track record of critically examined profiles of powerful figures and institutions, including “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” and “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. His films have repeatedly drawn legal threats and public pushback from their subjects, and several have been released theatrically by major distributors.

“The reason Elon Musk is freaking out about this upcoming documentary is because it is by Alex Gibney — one of the world's best accountability journalists/documentarians,” journalist David Sirota wrote Thursday in a post on X. “Musk knows Alex doesn't pull punches, doesn't cower and won't be bullied — and so the bully is mad.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary will also reveal new details about Musk’s unusual comments in the lead-up to the 2024 election, including remarks that he was aware of the election results “hours” before they were made public with the help of a secretive satellite program that collects “real-time data.”

Those comments were first revealed by Ashley St. Clair, a former MAGA figure and mother to one of Musk’s 14 known children, the majority of whom were conceived by means other than natural conception and whom Musk has referred to as his “legion.”

Musk has previously called the documentary a “hit piece” and referred to Gibney as a “douche.” The Oct. 16 theatrical release will make the film eligible for awards-season consideration, and its arrival comes as Musk remains a central and polarizing figure in both the technology industry and American politics.
