CoinMarketCap Acquires Coinglass to Expand Crypto Derivatives Data

CoinMarketCap has acquired Coinglass, a data platform specializing in cryptocurrency derivatives, in a deal that has already closed. The company announced the acquisition on Friday, September 25. Financial terms were disclosed.

The move pairs the widely used price tracking site — which says 115 million people visit each month to check prices and market data — with a platform focused on a different segment of the market. Coinglass tracks derivatives data such as open interest, funding rates, liquidations and options. Derivatives are contracts whose value is tied to an underlying asset rather than the asset bought outright.

The company confirmed the deal in a post on X:

CoinMarketCap has acquired CoinGlass, the derivatives data platform behind the liquidation heatmap, open-interest and funding-rate charts traders share every day. The reason is simple: most crypto volume now trades in derivatives, and CoinGlass is where traders go to make sense… — CoinMarketCap (@CoinMarketCap) September 25, 2026

What Coinglass Brings to CoinMarketCap

Founded in 2019, Coinglass covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 trading instruments. The platform serves over 5 million monthly users and counts more than 10,000 API customers who pull its data directly into their own tools.

Its best-known tools include a liquidation heatmap and open interest dashboards, charts that are frequently shared across crypto trading communities online. For readers new to the terminology, open interest measures the total number of outstanding derivative contracts, funding rates are periodic payments exchanged between long and short traders on perpetual futures to keep contract prices aligned with spot prices, and liquidations occur when leveraged positions are forcibly closed after losses deplete their margin.

Derivatives trading makes up most of the total volume in crypto markets, meaning the data Coinglass tracks reflects where much of the market's activity and risk actually happens. With the acquisition, CoinMarketCap users will be able to see derivatives positioning data alongside the prices they already check, including where liquidations are clustering and how funding rates are shifting.

Rush, the Chief Executive Officer of CoinMarketCap, commented on the deal. He said Coinglass built its reputation by focusing on one thing and doing it well. He added that CoinMarketCap's goal is to make that same data available to a larger audience, and said the company does not plan to change how Coinglass operates. The scale behind that ambition is notable: CoinMarketCap's 115 million monthly visitors dwarf the more than 5 million users Coinglass reaches on its own.

David Salamon, Chief Product Officer at CoinMarketCap, also spoke about the acquisition, saying open interest, funding and liquidations show where risk is actually taken in the market.

No Changes Expected for Coinglass Users

Coinglass confirmed it will continue to operate under its own brand. Its website, app, free tools, API and pricing will all stay the same, and the Coinglass team will remain in place following the deal. The company said it will keep building the product its users rely on daily.

The acquisition adds to CoinMarketCap's ownership history. Binance, a major crypto exchange, acquired CoinMarketCap back in April 2020. At that time, Binance said CoinMarketCap would continue operating independently and that it would have no influence over how the platform ranks cryptocurrencies. The continuity assurances now given to Coinglass users mirror the approach taken in that earlier deal.

CoinMarketCap has not said whether Coinglass data will be integrated directly into its main price pages. For now, the two platforms will continue running as separate products under the same parent company.
