- •The company said 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin activity is now processed on Base, its Ethereum Layer-2 network.
- •Coinbase Business is being positioned to let merchants receive USDC payments from AI agents without creating a separate checkout flow.
- •Coinbase has released the CDP x402 SDK to help developers add agent payments to APIs or MCP-based applications with minimal code.
- •Coinbase is also working with Agentic.Market and AWS as part of a broader push into AI agent payments and service discovery.

Coinbase has unveiled AiFi, a financial infrastructure initiative built around the emerging AI agent economy. According to the exchange, its x402 payment standard has already processed more than $100 million in payments, while 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin volume now takes place on Base, the company's Ethereum Layer-2 network. Coinbase is growing the AI agent payments business on the back of USDC, Coinbase Business, the CDP x402 SDK, and collaborations with companies such as AWS. The initiative arrives as payments incumbents pursue the same frontier: Visa's Intelligent Commerce program, Mastercard's Agent Pay, and Stripe's agentic-commerce partnership with OpenAI all target machine-initiated transactions.
Coinbase Builds a Financial Layer for AI Agents
Coinbase is increasingly confident that AI agents can do more than craft responses: they can research, decide, purchase services, and transact funds. The exchange is consolidating these capabilities into a new feature and service called AiFi, which it introduced alongside a post on X dated August 15, 2026.
Coinbase describes the agent economy as having three main participants: people who use AI agents, businesses that sell services to them, and developers who build the underlying tools.

For users, the appeal is that AI agents can take on research, planning, decision-making, and trading across cryptocurrencies, stocks, derivatives, and other financial activities. Coinbase has also launched Coinbase Advisor, an AI-powered investment advisor within its app. The larger emphasis, however, is on providing agents with direct access points to payments, so they no longer need to resort to traditional checkout methods that depend on human intervention at every step.
x402 Turns AI Agents Into Paying Customers
Coinbase presents x402 as an open, standardized protocol for machine-to-machine payments. AI agents can use it to make payments directly, without any human having to authorize each transaction. The protocol's name references HTTP status code 402, "Payment Required" — a designation reserved in the web's core specification since the 1990s but left essentially unused, which x402 repurposes for automated machine payments.
Since its launch last year, x402's transaction volume has already topped $100 million, the company indicated. Coinbase also states that 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin transaction volume is now processed on Base, its Ethereum Layer-2 solution that launched in 2023 and was built with Optimism on the OP Stack. The exchange is now collaborating with companies such as AWS to allow AI agents to pay instantly and seamlessly for the services they utilize.
USDC Payments Move Into the Agent Economy
Coinbase Business is being positioned as the payment rails for businesses that cater to AI agents. Through x402 support, businesses can receive USDC from agents without defining a separate payment flow.
Among the features Coinbase highlights are no original charge-back risk, 3.35% rewards for holding idle USDC, and tools to manage, reconcile, and withdraw funds from a single account. USDC is the second-largest stablecoin by circulation and is issued by Circle, with which Coinbase shares in the reserve income generated by the token under a long-standing arrangement between the two companies.
On the developer side, Coinbase has released the Coinbase Developer Store (CDP x402) SDK, enabling developers to include payments from their agents in APIs or MCPs — servers built on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 for connecting AI models to external tools and data — with minimal added code. That reduces the technical hurdle for teams that want to deploy applications with automated payments taken care of without being versed in the x402 protocol itself.
Agentic.Market Adds a Discovery Layer
Payments alone count for little if agents cannot find services to procure. Coinbase is also tying up with Agentic.Market, which operates as a discovery service for x402-compatible services. The payment flow is straightforward: agents start by finding available services, pinpoint the ones they require, and make the payment automatically.
Rather than marketing AI payments as a stand-alone crypto product, Coinbase is seeking to build an end-to-end program spanning financial transactions, stablecoin payments, developer infrastructure, and service discovery — all brought together under the AiFi banner and positioned against agent-payment initiatives already rolled out by the major card networks and Stripe.
