The move is intended to reduce the complexity of blockchain wallet addresses while making machine-to-machine commerce more practical as AI services increasingly interact and transact without human involvement.

The new capability builds on Cloudflare’s broader effort to make HTTP 402 Payment Required a foundation for programmable payments. Instead of relying on user accounts, API keys, or traditional billing systems, x402 allows software agents to discover paid resources and complete payments through standardized infrastructure.

Making AI payments easier

AI wallet handles provide a human-readable identity that maps to an underlying crypto wallet. Rather than exposing long blockchain addresses, developers can assign recognizable handles to AI agents, making payment routing simpler and reducing the risk of sending funds to incorrect addresses.

The feature is aimed at developers building AI applications that purchase APIs, datasets, inference services, and other digital resources, especially as more services are being designed for software agents rather than human users.
