Chainlink Launches CustodySync With Anchorage Digital Bank to Connect $700B in Custodied Crypto to DeFi
Key Takeaways
- •Chainlink introduced CustodySync to link DeFi lending markets with qualified custody, enabling institutions to use custodied assets as onchain collateral without transferring them out of regulated custody.
- •Anchorage Digital Bank serves as the official launch partner and is the first qualified custodian to implement CustodySync, with its Atlas infrastructure managing collateral handling, margin monitoring, and liquidation workflows.
- •Chainlink estimates that approximately $700 billion of digital assets held in custodians could potentially be channeled into onchain lending.
- •Under the CustodySync model, a transfer-restricted receipt token mirrors the custodied balance within the lending market while Chainlink Proof of Reserve publishes custody balances onchain.
- •Traditional custody markets hold roughly $250 trillion in assets, while DeFi lending markets carry more than $30 billion in active loans and over $80 billion in deposits.

Chainlink has introduced CustodySync, a new solution that connects decentralized finance (DeFi) lending markets with qualified custody, opening an alternative path for institutional funds to enter DeFi without moving assets out of regulated custody. Anchorage Digital Bank is the official launch partner, and institutional clients of the bank will be able to borrow against collateral that remains held at Anchorage.
Historically, tapping DeFi liquidity has required moving assets out of regulated custody, a tradeoff that has kept much of the custodied digital-asset supply on the sidelines of onchain lending. The product targets institutions that want access to DeFi liquidity while still requiring qualified custody, internal controls, and strict risk. According to Chainlink, approximately $700 billion of digital assets are held in custodians and could potentially be directed toward onchain lending.
Chainlink CustodySync Connects $700B in Custodied Crypto to DeFi
Traditional custody markets account for roughly $250 trillion in assets, according to Chainlink's figures, compared with an estimated $700 billion worth of digital assets currently sitting in custody. DeFi lending markets, by contrast, carry more than $30 billion in active locked-up loans and hold over $80 billion in deposits. The comparison underscores how early digital-asset custody remains relative to traditional custody, and how large the custodied digital-asset base is relative to today's onchain lending activity.
CustodySync is designed to harmonize the two systems. Under the model, an institution does not need to move its assets to a lending protocol. Instead, it can continue holding them with a qualified custodian while putting them to use onchain as collateral for borrowing.
Anchorage Digital Bank serves as the official launch partner and is using its Atlas Collateral Management infrastructure to coordinate collateral handling, margin monitoring, and liquidation processes. Additional details are available in Chainlink's official announcement.
Collateral Stays in Custody While Loans Move Onchain
Under the structure, the collateral balance remains under the custodian's control at all times. Chainlink Proof of Reserve publishes the custody balances onchain, and a transfer-restricted receipt token acts as the collateral within the lending market. The token mirrors the amount held in custody but does not create an independent claim outside the lending arrangement. Once a loan is drawn, the borrowed assets flow directly from the DeFi market to the institutional borrower.
Chainlink Data Feeds supply prices to the lending protocol, while Data Streams pass the same prices up to the custodian's off-chain systems. The shared pricing is intended to minimize the potential for the two parties to execute inconsistent liquidations or to arrive at different loan-to-value ratios.
Chainlink Combines CRE, Proof of Reserve, and Data Feeds in One Stack
CustodySync combines several Chainlink products into a single institutional workflow. The Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) manages interactions between the custody systems and the onchain markets. Proof of Reserve is used to complete balance checks across the system, while Data Feeds and Data Streams help ensure that collateral values remain consistent across both environments.
When a position exceeds its limits, the appointed collateral agent ensures that a sale process is carried out. During liquidation, CustodySync keeps the lending position synchronized by onboarding the proceeds onchain before final settlement.
Anchorage Digital Bank is the first qualified custodian to implement CustodySync. According to the announcement, the bank's Atlas instruments already provide collateral management for institutional loans, including monitoring as well as margin call and margin liquidation workflows. As the first implementation of the model, Anchorage's rollout is the reference point for custody-to-DeFi lending; additional qualified custodian integrations and lending-market support are the developments to watch as CustodySync moves beyond its launch configuration.
