The presence of a Japanese-trained runner underscores the King George's continued drawing power on the international stage, where runners from across the globe have increasingly targeted the race.

In the earlier International Handicap (2:55pm), EXTREMELY ZAIN appears primed for a step up to Group company. The well-bred three-year-old, trained by William Haggas — one of Britain's most prolific trainers of pattern-race winners — remains unbeaten after three starts. He made a successful handicap debut at York last month, overcoming traffic trouble to win a large-field seven-furlong contest decisively — another step forward from his previous form. While he may prove difficult to beat, the author identifies potential value in a World Pool Quinella (first two home in any order) rather than backing him outright.

AKKADIAN THUNDER brings solid Ascot form and looks well handicapped. He carried a higher rating when finishing down the field in this race twelve months ago, and had previously gone close over the same course and distance when runner-up in the Buckingham Palace Stakes. Though he only managed fifth over 1400m at Doncaster last week, he was repeatedly short of room in the closing stages and appears to be rounding into form.

The consistent BACK IN BLACK completes the Quinella selections. He has finished in the first four in seven of his last eight races, including a runner-up effort behind Aalto in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket two weeks ago.
