Barrick Mining Appoints Sebastiaan Bock to Lead International Division Ahead of Planned North American Spin-Off

Barrick Mining (NYSE: B; TSX: ABX) has appointed Sebastiaan Bock to head its international gold and copper business as the company prepares to separate its North American and overseas assets into distinct entities.

The restructuring reflects a broader push in the mining sector to simplify corporate structures and narrow the persistent valuation gap that diversified producers face when their portfolios span jurisdictions with sharply different risk profiles. By creating two standalone entities, Barrick would allow investors to value and allocate capital to North American and international assets independently.

Bock, who joined Barrick following its 2019 acquisition of Randgold Resources — the same path taken by former CEO Mark Bristow — has immediately assumed the role of CEO of Barrick's Rest of World division. He will oversee operations and projects spanning Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, a portfolio that produces more than 2 million gold-equivalent ounces annually, the company said.

BMO Capital Markets analysts described Bock's appointment as a positive development, pointing to his experience managing Barrick's Africa and Middle East portfolio across multiple roles. According to BMO, Bock will report to CEO Mark Hill until the completion of the North American IPO and is then expected to become CEO of Barrick.

The analysts also emphasized the Rest of World division's projected production growth and its relationships with Chinese partners as key selling points. Chinese mining companies are among the world's largest gold producers and have deepened their investments across resource-rich African and Latin American nations in recent years, making partnerships with them a strategic asset for international operators. Barrick expects output from the portfolio to increase by more than 20% over the next three years.

Shares in Barrick Mining declined 1.1% on Tuesday morning in Toronto to $56.41 apiece, giving the company a market valuation of $94.8 billion.

IPO Advances

Bock's appointment comes as Barrick moves forward with plans to separate its North American and international businesses, following the resolution of a month-long dispute with Newmont (NYSE, ASX: NEM) over Nevada mining assets.

Under a settlement announced Monday, Newmont agreed to pay Barrick $1.95 billion (C$2.7 billion) in cash within 30 days and consented to Barrick's planned initial public offering of its North American gold assets. Barrick expects to complete the IPO by year-end.

The resolution of the dispute removed the final obstacle to the offering, which would separate Barrick's North American assets from a geographically broader international portfolio that carries different political, operational, and investment risk profiles.

The planned split places greater emphasis on the performance of the Rest of World division. Barrick has indicated that the business could benefit from closer ties with Chinese partners through joint investments, access to technology, and supply-chain support.

Overseas Growth

Bock originally joined Barrick as finance chief for Africa and the Middle East before being appointed chief operating officer for the region in 2022. He now leads a division that represents a significant growth engine as the company seeks to sharpen management focus and address the valuation discount that investors frequently apply to miners operating in higher-risk jurisdictions.

Delivering the projected production growth while managing operations across a diverse set of jurisdictions will be central to establishing the overseas company as a distinct investment proposition following the separation. Market reception of the IPO and the initial trading performance of both entities will be closely watched as a barometer of investor appetite for pure-play geographic exposure in the gold and copper sector.
