One of autonomous trucking's most compelling commercial demonstrations is not playing out on an interstate highway. It is moving frac sand along a 42-mile conveyor in the Permian Basin, the highest-producing oil field in the United States.
Atlas Energy Solutions (NYSE: AESI) announced Friday an expansion of its driverless proppant delivery program with Kodiak AI (Nasdaq: KDK), adding a second simultaneous load-out point along its Dune Express sand conveyor system. The two companies also agreed to a timeline that scales the Atlas driverless truck fleet from 28 trucks to 100 by mid-2027.
Two Depots, One Basin
The addition of a second load-out point fundamentally changes Atlas's service offering. The company is now operating driverless trucks concurrently from sites in Texas and New Mexico, located roughly 90 minutes apart. Previously, its autonomous trucks operated from only one load-out point at a time.
The practical implication is that Atlas can now serve well sites across a broader portion of the Permian simultaneously, rather than sequencing deliveries from a single origin point.
Atlas supplies proppant to oil and gas producers and manages last-mile delivery to well sites, integrating mining and transportation automation with logistics management. Proppant — specialized sand pumped into wells during hydraulic fracturing to hold open fissures in shale rock — is among the most schedule-sensitive inputs in a well completion operation. A crew waiting on sand is a crew incurring significant costs, and the Permian's multi-well pad designs demand continuous supply to keep fracturing crews running around the clock.

A Driverless Fleet Measured in Tons
Atlas has steadily expanded its autonomous program since its first driverless deployments in 2024. As of March 31, 2026, the company operated 28 driverless trucks across 15 distinct routes. Those trucks have carried approximately 7,000 loads and hauled more than 450,000 tons of sand. The fleet logged more than 23,500 driverless hours in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
The single-day record was set on July 20, when Kodiak-powered trucks delivered 176 loads of sand — the highest daily count across 18 months of driverless deployments with Atlas in the Permian Basin.
Kodiak notes that it became the first company to deploy customer-owned and -operated driverless trucks in commercial service in 2024. The trucks run the Kodiak Driver, an autonomous system that pairs the company's proprietary software with modular, vehicle-agnostic hardware. While most autonomous trucking developers have targeted long-haul highway corridors, Kodiak's deployment with Atlas represents one of the few commercial driverless operations running entirely on private industrial routes — a controlled environment that removes the complexity of shared public infrastructure.

Three Trailers, 135 Tons
Earlier this year, the two companies introduced a capability enabling a single autonomous truck to haul three connected trailers simultaneously. Atlas and Kodiak describe the operation as the first autonomous triple-trailer trucking deployment, with a combined loaded weight exceeding 135 tons.
For a sand hauler, the economics are straightforward: fewer tractors moving the same tonnage reduces cost per ton on the most repetitive leg of a completion job.
Public Road Operations on the Horizon
Atlas and Kodiak expect the fleet to begin operating on public roads in early 2027. Kodiak-equipped Atlas trucks can already operate in mixed and two-way traffic. Both the public road timeline and the 100-truck target remain subject to regulatory and operational milestones. The transition to public roads would place Kodiak alongside companies like Aurora Innovation and Kodiak's own highway freight operations in Texas, marking a broader expansion of driverless commercial trucking beyond enclosed industrial settings.
