Alsons Power Group's Sarangani Energy Corp. placed first among 33 coal-fired power plants across the Philippines in a compliance assessment conducted by the Philippine Electricity Market Corp. (PEMC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Alsons Power said Sarangani Energy received the Top 1 Most Compliant Generator Award in the coal resource category after posting a compliance rating of 97.71%, placing it ahead of the 32 other coal-fired facilities assessed nationwide.

The award honors electricity generators for their compliance with the rules and requirements of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), the trading venue where electricity is bought and sold to supplement supply secured under bilateral contracts. PEMC oversees the governance of the WESM, including the monitoring of compliance with market rules. Because spot-market purchases fill gaps left by contracted supply, a generator's compliance rating serves as a measure of how consistently it meets its obligations under those rules.

"This recognition reflects the strong commitment of the Alsons Power Group to operational excellence, environment sustainability, regulatory compliance, and responsible participation in the Philippine energy market," said Lumen P. Balboa, Vice-President for Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, and Industry Relations at Alsons Power.

According to the company, compliance with electricity market rules is vital to maintaining transparency and fair competition in the power sector.

"As the Philippine energy sector continues to evolve, adherence to market rules remains essential to ensuring fair competition, transparent transactions, and efficient market operations," it said.

Sarangani Energy is an affiliate of Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co., through Alsons Thermal Energy Corp., a joint venture between MGEN and the Alsons group.

The company operates a 237-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani, which supplies electricity to Mindanao.
