A tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz reported hearing two explosions on Wednesday night, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the British government agency that monitors maritime security in the region.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:18 UTC on Wednesday, about nine nautical miles southeast of Kumzar, Oman, UKMTO said in a social media post.
"The Master reported hearing two explosions whilst transiting the Straits of Hormuz," UKMTO stated. "The vessel and crew are safe, and no environmental damage has been reported."
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which roughly a fifth of global oil consumption transits daily, making any security incident in the area a significant concern for energy markets and shipping insurers.
