Brian Armstrong Says AI Agents Will Increase Demand for Crypto Payments

Author: The Bit Journal·

Key Takeaways

  • Armstrong said the idea that crypto should be abandoned in favor of AI reflects outdated zero-sum thinking.
  • He argued that AI agents will need instant, programmable, cross-border payment rails, which he says crypto can provide.
  • Coinbase’s x402 protocol enables AI agents and applications to make instant USDC payments without API keys, subscriptions, or manual logins.
  • x402 is now managed by the Linux Foundation and supported by companies including Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, AWS, and Circle.
  • Despite reported growth in usage, adoption remains early and Coinbase faces rising competition from other payment and stablecoin providers.
Brian Armstrong Says AI Agents Will Increase Demand for Crypto Payments

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has renewed the debate over artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, arguing that the rise of AI agents will strengthen rather than replace digital assets. In a series of posts on July 27, Armstrong said developers and investors are not abandoning crypto for AI; instead, he said the two technologies are intended to complement each other.

Armstrong said the common advice to “pivot to AI” reflects outdated thinking that assumes one innovation must replace another. He argued that cryptocurrency is the financial system on which AI agents and autonomous software systems will increasingly depend as they become more common.

"If you're in crypto, pivot to AI." I used to hear versions of this, and it's the wrong way to think about the world. It's zero sum, scarcity thinking. Crypto is a general purpose technology. It's infrastructure, the same way electricity or the internet is infrastructure. It… — Brian Armstrong (@brian_armstrong) July 26, 2026

AI Agents Need Crypto Infrastructure

Armstrong has described this direction as Agentic Finance, or AiFi, a concept Coinbase is actively developing. He said AI agents are likely to conduct financial transactions at a scale that could exceed human activity, which would require payment systems that are instant, programmable, and able to operate across borders.

He argued that traditional banking systems were built for people rather than software. AI agents cannot quickly pass Know Your Customer procedures, open bank accounts, or wait several days for international transfers. By contrast, software can send and receive value through crypto wallets and stablecoins without those constraints, which is why payment rails designed for machine-to-machine use have become a growing focus across both crypto and fintech.

Throughout 2026, the Coinbase chief executive has repeatedly said blockchain is the most viable payment rail for AI agents worldwide.

Coinbase Expands Its AiFi Vision

A central part of Coinbase’s plan is x402, a payment protocol designed to transform the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. The system allows AI agents and applications to make instant on-chain payments in USDC without API keys, subscriptions, or manual account logins.

When software reaches a paid service, it can complete a stablecoin transaction and gain access within seconds. According to Coinbase, this combination of x402, the Base blockchain, and USDC supports a wide range of emerging payment services for current AI agents.

The protocol is no longer solely under Coinbase’s control. It is now managed by the Linux Foundation and supported by major technology and payments companies including Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, AWS, and Circle, reflecting broader industry backing for machine-to-machine payments.

AI Agents Face Early Adoption Challenges

Despite Armstrong’s optimism, adoption is still at an early stage. x402 reportedly has handled more than 165 million transactions across thousands of AI agents, but that remains small compared with the volume processed by traditional financial networks.

Analysts have also noted that many of those transactions are tests rather than real business activity. Another challenge is the need for human authorization in frequent micropayment scenarios, which some companies are trying to address with new authorization protocols that allow AI agents to spend within predefined limits. That makes standards, controls, and interoperability central issues as the market develops.

Competition Grows in AI Payment Market

Coinbase is also facing growing competition as companies such as Visa, Mastercard, Google, and specialized fintech firms build their own payment infrastructure for AI agents. The stablecoin sector is likewise seeing new competition from rival stablecoin networks, making it unlikely that a single platform will dominate the market.

Even so, Armstrong continues to argue that AI and crypto are complementary technologies. He said programmable digital money could become the financial backbone for the everyday operations of autonomous AI systems if they become a significant part of the global economy.

Conclusion

As competition intensifies, Coinbase’s vision of AI agents using blockchain-based payments is likely to face closer scrutiny. Adoption remains in its early stages, but Armstrong expects programmable digital money to become an important part of the autonomous software ecosystem and a foundation for the next generation of AI-powered financial activity.
