Social media observers expressed astonishment on Wednesday after Nevada Republican Governor Joe Lombardo was forced to intervene when a crowd of Trump supporters began booing at the mention of a fallen police officer's name.

Lombardo was addressing an audience in Las Vegas, where he was discussing Trump-related accounts, when he referenced police officer Austin Abdelnabi. Abdelnabi, a Marine veteran, died on Tuesday following a shootout with a suspect.

"So I know the pastor spoke about Officer Abdelnabi," Lombardo said, before being interrupted by audible booing from the crowd.

"No. We're not booing him. He's the officer that passed away," Lombardo corrected the attendees.

The crowd subsequently fell silent as Lombardo called for a moment of silence in honor of Abdelnabi.

Reactions on social media were swift, with numerous critics highlighting what they characterized as a prejudicial response triggered by the officer's surname.

Dr. Steven Buckley, a lecturer in Digital Media Sociology at City St. George's, University of London, wrote on Bluesky: "The booing of what sounds like a foreign (and no doubt in the man's mind, 'Islamic') name really speaks volumes about the mindset of some Trump supporters. Even when Trump is gone, this white Christian nationalist section of US society will still remain."

Danielle Blake, a political commentator who identifies as a "British social Democrat" and has over 1,500 followers on the platform, wrote on Bluesky: "It's a Klan Rally. These people only have to hear a name that their lizard brains process as sounding Arabic and hate immediately pours out."

Amanda Berry, a progressive political commentator and military veteran, posted on X: "Are they booing because they think he's a Muslim? That'd be really crappy."
