Moderna's aandelen koersen stevig hoger na nieuws over een gepersonaliseerde kankerbehandeling, maar topman Stéphane Bancel wijst op wat hij ziet als een grotere dreiging: China's door de staat gesteunde poging om de Verenigde Staten in de biotechnologie uit te dagen.

In een interview maandag bij "Mornings with Maria" zei Bancel dat Washington de mRNA-financiering terugschroeft, terwijl Beijing staatsgeld in de biotechnologie pompt om de VS uit te dagen. Volgens hem helpt het om de geneesmiddelenproductie op Amerikaanse bodem te houden — inclusief bij Moderna's faciliteiten in Massachusetts — om zowel Amerikaanse patiënten als de voorsprong van Amerika in de gezondheidszorg te beschermen.

"I think the government has an active role to play in taking risk for really innovative medicine," Bancel vertelde FOX Business' Cheryl Casone, "and indeed, if you think about what's happening around the world, we know, for example, that in China there's a lot of mRNA investments."

"The technology has already proven itself during COVID with the vaccine, now with cancer, as I said, very soon in rare genetic disease, and I think that we want to make sure that there is investment because those investments in the long term help American patients," vervolgde hij.

China's door de staat aangestuurde opmars

De Chinese Communistische Partij heeft biotechnologie bestempeld als een "strategic emerging industry" en staatsfinanciering en subsidies verstrekt om binnenlandse bedrijven te ondersteunen, terwijl China streeft naar dominantie in belangrijke delen van de biotechnologiesector, volgens de National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology.

De Amerikaanse overheid heeft daarentegen sommige mRNA-financiering teruggeschroefd. Het Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) maakte afgelopen augustus bekend dat het projecten voor de ontwikkeling van mRNA-vaccins ter waarde van bijna $500 million zou afbouwen via de Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Een woordvoerder van HHS vertelde Fox News Digital dat het departement sommige mRNA-onderzoeken blijft steunen, waaronder voor moeilijk te behandelen kankers, terwijl de technologie aan strengere controle wordt onderworpen.

"Secretary Kennedy has been clear that he believes mRNA products warrant heightened scientific scrutiny. HHS continues to support mRNA research where the science shows promise, including for hard-to-treat cancers. Secretary Kennedy recently committed the National Cancer Institute at NIH to a public-private partnership to invest in research and clinical trials," aldus de woordvoerder.

"At the same time, HHS wound down investments in mRNA vaccines for upper respiratory viruses because the technology does not effectively protect against infection from rapidly mutating viruses such as COVID-19 and flu. These companies had already received substantial federal investment, and HHS redirected those resources toward other promising technologies," vervolgde de verklaring. "HHS will continue to invest in innovative medical research based on the strength of the science and its potential to improve outcomes for American patients."

Productie in Amerika

In plaats van te vertrouwen op buitenlandse toeleveringsketens voor farmaceutische grondstoffen en ingrediënten, zei Bancel dat Moderna deze dreiging heeft aangepakt door zijn productieactiviteiten in Massachusetts uit te breiden, zodat geavanceerde gepersonaliseerde geneesmiddelen op Amerikaanse bodem worden ontwikkeld en geproduceerd. "The team has done an amazing job to shrink the manufacturing process, the machines, because it's the same technology that will make millions of doses in one reactor," zei Bancel. "It's actually happening in America, in Massachusetts, in a factory that we built and that is ready to go."

Hij wees ook op kostenverschillen met andere gepersonaliseerde therapieën. "In terms of cost, because it's not using human material, like CAR-T cell therapy is a very expensive price because it's a very expensive manufacturing process. In our case, it's all used with enzyme[s], it's in water, it is a very different thing. As we get the data and we get closer to discussing pricing, but we don't have the very high cost of goods that the self-therapy products have."

Een keerpunt voor Moderna

De aandelen van Moderna stegen op 19 augustus met 177% nadat het bedrijf en Merck aankondigden dat hun gepersonaliseerde mRNA-behandeling, in combinatie met Merck's Keytruda, belangrijke eindpunten had behaald in een fase 3-melanomatrial, wat beleggers nieuw bewijs gaf voor het potentieel van mRNA buiten vaccins tegen infectieziekten.

"If you look at the company since day one, we try to use our technology across many therapeutic areas: Infectious disease, vaccine of course, cancer," merkte Bancel op. "So last week was a big step forward. We became an oncology company, but I think by the end of the year, we should also become a rare genetic disease company."
