Ethereum Validator Exit Queue Falls to Zero as Staked ETH Hits Record High

Ethereum’s validator exit queue has cleared less than a year after it stretched to 45 days while millions of ETH waited to be unlocked from staking.

The queue now shows no ETH waiting to leave staking, even as the amount of ETH staked on the network has continued to rise to a new record.

Ethereum Exit Queue Drops to Zero

Current data from ValidatorQueue shows that zero ETH is waiting to be unstaked from the network. As a result, any validator that chooses to unstake ETH can begin the process immediately, subject only to Ethereum’s standard withdrawal mechanics.

That marks a sharp reversal from Q3 last year, when the validator exit queue had expanded to roughly 2.6 million ETH. At that time, validators faced waits of as long as 45 days before they could withdraw their holdings. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin defended the extended waiting period, arguing that it was an important component of the network’s defense.

Ethereum’s entry and exit queues are part of the protocol’s validator churn limits, which restrict how quickly validators can join or leave the active set. Those limits are designed to avoid abrupt changes in the validator base while still allowing staking positions to enter and exit over time.

The current imbalance has moved in the opposite direction. ValidatorQueue data shows that more than 2.5 million ETH is now waiting to enter staking, with an estimated activation delay of nearly 44 days. In other words, prospective validators are waiting about a month and a half before they can begin earning staking rewards on their ETH.

The shift removes one of the major concerns raised last year: that millions of staked ETH could quickly move to exchanges if validators decided to exit and sell. With the exit queue now empty and the entry queue elevated, the immediate pressure from validator withdrawals has eased.

Nearly 41 Million ETH Staked

The broader staking picture has also strengthened. The number of active validators securing Ethereum has neared 900,000, while almost 41 million ETH is currently staked. That represents about 33.6% of the entire circulating supply.

According to the report, this is the highest staking share in Ethereum’s history, meaning roughly one in every three ETH is locked in staking rather than sitting on exchanges or circulating actively.

Tom Lee’s Bitmine remains one of the leading participants in the sector, having staked more than 4.9 million tokens through its institutional platform MAVAN.

Staked ETH is not permanently removed from supply. However, it is generally considered less liquid because validators must pass through Ethereum’s withdrawal process before regaining access to those holdings. The size and direction of the queues are therefore closely watched because they show whether validator demand is leaning toward entering or leaving the network.

Merlijn The Trader also reported on X that the record level of staked ETH comes even as staking rewards have declined to 2.62% per year from 3.05%, while issuance has increased from 0.757% to 0.842%: https://x.com/MerlijnTrader/status/2080624041921224973
