Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patent Portfolio in Deal With More Than 680 Families

Circle Internet Group (CRCL) said Monday that it acquired more than 680 blockchain patent families from IBM, a transaction that makes the stablecoin issuer the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States and materially expands its intellectual property portfolio.

The acquired portfolio includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.

According to an official statement, the patents cover foundational blockchain technology as well as applications in banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.

Circle said the patents strengthen the technology foundation underlying USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and its broader suite of onchain financial products. The company also said Circle and IBM plan to explore additional commercial opportunities beyond the patent transfer.

Sarah Wilson, Circle’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, said intellectual property is critical to advancing the company’s mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure, adding that IBM has been a pioneer in technological innovation.

IBM’s Blockchain Legacy Adds Strategic Value

The acquisition comes as Circle continues to build out its onchain financial stack, including its USDC stablecoin, Circle Payments Network, and the Arc blockchain platform.

IBM was among the earliest large enterprises to invest heavily in blockchain research, filing hundreds of patents tied to distributed ledger applications over the past decade.

For Circle, adding this portfolio brings legal and technical depth to a company that has grown primarily through USDC issuance and payment rails rather than patent accumulation.

Neither company disclosed why IBM chose to divest the portfolio or whether the transaction included ongoing licensing arrangements.

Circle’s new position as the top U.S. blockchain patent holder gives it a stronger legal foundation as it scales infrastructure aimed at banks, financial institutions, and enterprise developers. No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed.

Stablecoin Competition Is Heating Up

The acquisition comes as competition in the stablecoin market intensifies.

Earlier this month, a consortium of more than 140 companies announced plans to launch Open USD, a proposed rival to USDC that could challenge Circle’s market position if adoption gains traction.

Why This Matters

Although Circle did not disclose financial terms, the acquisition strengthens one of the company’s key competitive moats: intellectual property. The expanded patent portfolio could support future licensing opportunities, strengthen litigation defenses, and reinforce Circle’s position as it seeks broader adoption among banks and enterprise clients.
