The United States has begun domestic production of heterojunction technology (HJT) solar cells for the first time, following Canadian Solar's official opening of the initial 2.1-GW phase of its cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The plant operates under Canadian Solar's subsidiary CS PowerTech and will manufacture HJT cells destined for the company's module assembly plant in Mesquite, Texas. The launch marks a notable step in the broader U.S. solar manufacturing buildout that has accelerated since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which introduced tax credits and incentives for domestic clean energy production.
At full capacity, the Jeffersonville facility is expected to produce more than 6 GW of solar cells annually, support over 1,200 jobs, and represent nearly $1 billion in local investment.
