BitSpider Eyes Crypto POS Return After Filing MiCA Authorisation Application in Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia, July 24, 2026 — BitSpider has drawn attention to its previously developed Crypto POS platform after submitting an application in Estonia for authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA. MiCA is the European Union's comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto-asset service providers, designed to harmonise rules across all member states and provide legal certainty for companies operating in the bloc.

The platform was designed to provide an alternative model for cryptocurrency payments at the point of sale, an area where adoption has historically been limited by user experience friction and regulatory uncertainty. Instead of relying only on QR code scanning, it enabled customers to complete transactions through a tap-and-PIN process similar to the experience of using a traditional bank card.

BitSpider said its Crypto POS system supported two payment methods through one device. Customers could pay by scanning a QR code from a self-custody wallet or another compatible wallet application. They could also tap a BitSpider near-field communication (NFC) card on the terminal, enter a PIN, choose a coin and confirm the payment without using a smartphone, wallet application or QR code.

According to the company, the card-and-PIN method worked across multiple blockchains and stablecoins. Comparable tap-to-pay crypto card products available at the time were generally limited to Bitcoin. Similar tap-and-PIN crypto card products from other providers entered the market in 2025, after BitSpider had designed and demonstrated the concept in 2024.

A Point-of-Sale Platform Built for Crypto Payments

The BitSpider Crypto POS was built on networks compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the most widely used smart-contract execution environment, which supports a broad ecosystem of decentralised applications and token standards. The system combined dedicated all-in-one terminal hardware with a cloud-based merchant management application.

The terminal included a pre-installed application, a built-in receipt printer, a two-dimensional (2D) scanner and contactless payment acceptance. The merchant management application was designed to manage goods, services, orders, POS devices and employee permissions.

The platform accepted Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins and other Ethereum-standard (ERC-20) and TRON-standard (TRC-20) tokens. It also displayed an on-screen confirmation once a payment had been received.

BitSpider said payment-data handling was designed in line with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Transactions were also subject to anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) processing consistent with applicable counter-terrorist financing (CTF) requirements.

Through partner settlement arrangements, merchants could accept cryptocurrency at the point of sale while receiving fiat currency in their bank accounts.

MiCA Application and Potential Next Steps

BitSpider submitted its application for authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA to Finantsinspektsioon, the Estonian Financial Supervision Authority, on 30 June 2026. The application was formally registered on 1 July 2026. Estonia, a long-standing hub for fintech and digital infrastructure companies within the EU, has seen growing interest from crypto firms seeking MiCA authorisation through its supervisory authority.

The company has paused onboarding of new clients while it awaits the authorisation decision.

If authorisation is granted, BitSpider said it intends to reassess a return to the point-of-sale market. The initial focus would be on its non-custodial, wallet-based payment method, in line with the company's non-custodial model.

Any future card-based functionality would be reviewed separately and introduced only within the relevant regulatory permissions. BitSpider said any revived offering would be limited to crypto-assets permitted under MiCA, including MiCA-authorised e-money tokens such as USD Coin (USDC).
