BitMEX to Shut Down Crypto Exchange on September 23 After 11 Years

BitMEX will permanently close its cryptocurrency exchange on Sept. 23, 2026, ending more than 11 years of operations for a platform closely associated with the growth of perpetual crypto derivatives.

HDR Global Trading Limited, the owner and operator of BitMEX, approved the shutdown after completing a strategic review of the business. The company also pointed to conditions across the broader cryptocurrency industry as part of the basis for the decision. The closure comes amid an increasingly competitive derivatives landscape in which Binance, Bybit, and other platforms have captured the majority of global crypto futures volume.

The exchange stopped accepting new account registrations on July 23. Existing users have been urged to close open positions and withdraw their assets ahead of the closure. BitMEX will begin restricting new positions at 04:00 UTC on Aug. 26, before ending exchange services at 04:00 UTC on Sept. 23.

Strategic Review Prompts Closure Decision

HDR Global Trading Limited's board decided to wind down BitMEX after reviewing the company's position and the wider market environment. BitMEX did not name a single event as the direct cause of the closure, instead linking the decision to the outcome of its strategic business review and changing conditions in the crypto sector.

Until the staged wind-down begins, the exchange will continue operating normally. Existing customers can still trade and submit withdrawal requests before the restrictions come into effect. BitMEX has also made staked BMEX tokens available in holder accounts. However, new users can no longer open accounts on the platform.

The closure will end the trading operations of an exchange that helped popularize perpetual swaps and high-leverage crypto derivatives. BitMEX has long positioned itself as a venue for professional derivatives traders, and its products influenced offerings later adopted by other major cryptocurrency trading platforms.

Trading Limits Begin on August 26

BitMEX will introduce new risk limits from 04:00 UTC on Aug. 26. After that time, users will no longer be able to open new positions or increase existing positions. They will only be permitted to reduce their exposure as the exchange prepares to close its markets.

The company may also force-close certain positions before the final shutdown date. BitMEX said it may settle contracts early in cases where limited liquidity affects orderly trading. The exchange said it will notify users before applying those measures.

BitMEX also warned traders that it will not cover losses associated with delayed position closures. Users have been told to manage open trades before the deadline to avoid forced closures or other settlement procedures during the wind-down period.

Withdrawals, Account Fees and Security Checks

BitMEX will stop providing exchange services after the Sept. 23 deadline. Users who still have funds on the platform after trading ends will be able to log in to view balances and transaction records. They will also be able to submit withdrawal requests after the exchange has stopped operating its markets.

The platform will continue holding assets until users complete withdrawals. KYC-verified users who leave funds on the platform after the closure time will be charged a monthly account fee. BitMEX said the fee will be either $50 in equivalent value or 1% per year, whichever amount is higher. The company may increase that fee later after providing advance notice.

BitMEX said it expects fraud attempts to increase during the closure period. The exchange told users to ignore messages claiming to offer faster or priority withdrawals, noting that it does not provide an expedited withdrawal service. The company said it will apply additional checks to withdrawal requests.

Network constraints may also slow some transfers. Bitcoin confirmations can take close to an hour during busy periods, and address availability may create further delays. BitMEX said withdrawal requests marked as processing will remain in the queue until the platform sends them on-chain.

The exchange's proof-of-reserves data shows approximately $1.037 billion in crypto assets against about $1.016 billion in liabilities.

BitMEX's Role in Crypto Derivatives

Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed founded BitMEX in 2014. The exchange became known for professional crypto derivatives products and high-leverage trading. BitMEX says it introduced the 100x leverage perpetual swap, a product structure that later spread across major cryptocurrency platforms and became one of the most widely traded crypto instruments in the industry.

The company also says it never lost customer funds through a hack during its operating history. At one point, BitMEX ranked among the largest crypto derivatives exchanges, although Binance and Bybit later gained greater market share as competition intensified.

Hayes and his co-founders stepped down from executive roles after criminal charges were filed in the United States in 2020. The charges stemmed from allegations of violating the Bank Secrecy Act and failing to implement adequate anti-money-laundering controls. BitMEX subsequently agreed to pay $100 million to settle related civil penalties with the CFTC and FinCEN in 2021. Hayes and Delo each pleaded guilty and received sentences of probation and home confinement.

An attempted sale of the exchange in 2025 did not result in an announced transaction.

The shutdown will close BitMEX's trading business, but withdrawal functionality will remain available. The exchange has asked customers to act early, verify all communications and use official channels as the platform moves through its wind-down process.
