However, as Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum, explained, the market had priced in an even more aggressive outcome.

"It was priced for something much closer to a blowout," Boloor said. "It was priced for an exceptional result, and this was not an exceptional result."

Data Center Momentum Drives Growth

The standout performer for the quarter was AMD's data center segment, which more than doubled. Data center revenue surged 107% year-over-year to hit $6.7 billion. The segment now accounts for 58% of AMD's total revenue, a significant increase from 42% just one year ago. This rapid expansion firmly cements AMD's position as the primary alternative to Nvidia in the highly competitive AI infrastructure market, driven by strong adoption of AMD's Instinct MI300 series accelerators for AI training and inference workloads. "The company did beat across the board, but it wasn't enough to reset expectations for a stock that's trading nearly 60 times earnings," Boloor added.

Client and Gaming Headwinds

Beyond the data center, AMD highlighted some macroeconomic challenges facing its other segments. The company flagged a softening PC market for the second half of the year, pointing to higher memory and component costs that are weighing on overall consumer and enterprise demand. CEO Lisa Su, however, stated that AMD expects its client business to outperform the broader market despite these macroeconomic headwinds.
