Dundalk Marine Terminalで起きたこの事故を受け、Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) PoliceとOccupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) が調査を開始しており、整備された港湾施設であってもcargo-handling作業に伴う危険性を浮き彫りにしている。
MDTAによると、月曜日の午前9時すぎ、負傷した作業員の通報を受けて警官がターミナルへ出動した。現場到着時、53歳のDavid Deon Smith氏がcargo-handling operations中に機器に衝突されていたことが確認された。
International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 333のメンバーであったSmith氏は近くの病院へ搬送されたが、救急隊員による延命措置にもかかわらず死亡が確認された。
地元メディアは、Smith氏が職務を遂行していた際にクレーンブームが落下したと報じた。同港での業務関連死は20年ぶりだった。
同僚たちは、Smith氏をILAコミュニティで親しみやすく広く知られた人物として記憶している。Maryland Port AdministrationのExecutive DirectorであるJonathan Daniels氏は声明で、ILAのメンバーを「the backbone of the Port of Baltimore」と呼び、Smith氏の家族と港湾コミュニティ全体に哀悼の意を表した。
Ports Americaが運営するDundalk Marine Terminalには13のバースと4基のコンテナクレーンがあり、コンテナ、ro-ro、wood pulp、steel、breakbulk、project cargoを扱っている。
