Il presidente Donald Trump avrebbe trascorso più del 26 percento dei giorni del suo secondo mandato giocando a golf e, secondo il noto scrittore sportivo Rick Reilly, il suo comportamento in campo offre una finestra rivelatrice sul suo carattere oltre lo sport. "He's got a pancake swing and the yips — that's when you just can't commit to the shot, and you suddenly flinch," Reilly ha detto a Melber. "He chips like Edward Scissorhands. He's just awful, especially around the green. He hits it pretty well off the tee, but when he plays his own courses, he's got a caddy who'll toss it out of the rough or out of the bunker for him. One time I saw him hit it into the lake, and suddenly he's on the fairway. I said, 'What the hell, Donald?' And he said, 'It must have hit the tee marker.'"

Reilly ha spiegato che nessuno contesta Trump nei suoi campi perché gli ospiti temono di essere allontanati. "There's no beating him at his own course, because nobody wants to get thrown out of the club. It's kind of like when you race your three-year-old in a foot race and say, 'You won' — because nobody wants to be the one who ruins it."

Melber ha insistito oltre, citando filmati dell'anno precedente che sembravano mostrare un caddie mentre avvicinava una palla al green. Ha chiesto a Reilly che cosa avesse valutato anni prima riguardo all'uomo che sarebbe poi diventato presidente.

Reilly ha inquadrato la risposta nel contesto dello sport, non della politica di parte. "Look, I don't know about politics, but I do know golf," ha detto Reilly. "Golf is like bicycle shorts — it reveals a lot about a man. If he's going to cheat you at golf, is he going to cheat his friends and family? He's going to cheat the country. He's going to cheat in elections. He's going to cheat on his wives and his taxes. In fact, we've asked him, 'You can't cheat me like this,' and he said, 'Well, I cheat on my wives, I cheat on my taxes — why wouldn't I cheat on my own golf course?' That's how it works."

Reilly in passato aveva già criticato apertamente il comportamento di Trump legato al golf. All'inizio della settimana, ha pubblicato su X, usando il golf come uno dei vari esempi per sostenere che Trump abbia danneggiato tutto ciò che tocca.

"Reflecting pool was fine," ha scritto Reilly su X. "Now it's fenced off. Kennedy Center was fine. Now it's closed. WH was fine. Now it looks like a 99-cent Thai joint. Boats sailed thru Hormuz. Now Iran owns it. Golf was cool. Now there's a greasy orange splotch on it."

Altre preoccupazioni sono emerse riguardo alle proprietà golfistiche di Trump, che restano parte del più ampio portafoglio della Trump Organization e continuano a essere oggetto di controlli normativi e operativi anche mentre ricopre la carica di presidente. A luglio, sono emersi risultati di un'ispezione sanitaria in uno dei suoi club. Il giornalista di NOTUS Dave Levinthal ha riferito lunedì che un funzionario sanitario della contea di Loudoun, in visita al ristorante del Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C., aveva individuato diverse violazioni.

"When a Loudoun County health official visited the Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C.'s restaurant last month, the inspector spotted some invaders," ha riferito Levinthal. L'ispezione ha rilevato una "large quantity of small flies" in un locale di deposito e ha trovato "several food items stored at a temperature above the required 41 degrees Fahrenheit minimum," inclusi blue cheese a 54 degrees, sausage links a 51 degrees, sausage patties a 49 degrees e pasta a 49 degrees.

Il rapporto ha inoltre documentato "raw steak, fish and burgers" conservati in modo improprio sopra alimenti pronti al consumo come tortillas e salse, e ha rilevato che la soluzione igienizzante chimica del lavello superava i limiti normativi per il livello massimo di concentrazione.

A febbraio, NOTUS aveva anche riferito che Trump stava ristrutturando i campi da golf pubblici di Washington, D.C. in modi che li rendevano inaccessibili per tutti tranne i golfisti più abbienti.
