The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's view that financial markets are unlikely to operate on a single blockchain has brought renewed attention to Ripple's long-running interoperability strategy.
DTCC, the world's largest post-trade infrastructure provider, has said the future of finance is expected to involve multiple distributed ledgers operating alongside one another. The organization provides clearing and settlement for the bulk of U.S. securities transactions, processing trades worth trillions of dollars annually, which gives its infrastructure outlook significant weight among institutions evaluating blockchain adoption. That outlook places interoperability among the industry's key priorities as banks, payment firms and market infrastructure providers consider tokenized assets and blockchain-based settlement systems.
The position is closely aligned with Ripple's earlier approach. Rather than designing around a future in which one blockchain becomes dominant, Ripple developed the Interledger Protocol, or ILP, to connect separate payment networks. XRP is used in that model as a bridge asset for value transfers between otherwise distinct ledgers.
Ripple's Interledger Protocol Was Built for Multiple Ledgers
Ripple's strategy was documented years before institutional discussions about tokenized finance became widespread. Research on Ripple's technology said the company recognized that "the world will never agree on one Ledger" and created the open-source Interledger Protocol to address that issue.
Instead of requiring banks, payment providers and financial institutions to move onto the XRP Ledger, ILP was designed to allow different ledgers to communicate with each other. The aim was to connect existing systems rather than replace them with a single blockchain standard. The protocol was originally developed by Ripple engineers Stefan Thomas and Evan Schwartz, and the open-source Interledger project has since been used in browser-based payment standards beyond Ripple's own products.
The same research said Ripple later renamed the Ripple Ledger as the XRP Ledger to highlight the role of XRP. It also noted that many of Ripple's enterprise products increasingly used ILP to link payment systems across different networks.
That framework resembles the direction DTCC described in July 2026. Rather than adopting one blockchain as the standard for all financial activity, institutions are preparing for an environment in which multiple ledgers function together. The Bank for International Settlements has similarly explored multi-platform models in its research on cross-border payments and tokenized assets, reflecting the same premise across central banking and market infrastructure discussions.
XRP's Role in Cross-Ledger Settlement
Ripple's documentation describes two operating modes for ILP. Atomic Mode is intended for trusted institutions, with validators approving transfers between participants.
Universal Mode is structured differently. It supports transfers between untrusted connectors without requiring notaries. In this configuration, XRP serves as the bridge asset used to move value across separate ledgers. Transfers must settle within a specified time window or expire automatically.
The design allows institutions to retain their own blockchain networks or payment infrastructure while still sending assets across different systems. ILP therefore functions as a connector between networks instead of a replacement for existing financial architecture.
If financial institutions continue to adopt multi-ledger models, Ripple's interoperability layer remains relevant because each additional connected network increases the need for efficient settlement across different systems.
Ripple Expands Institutional Activity
Ripple's interoperability strategy is also being supported by a series of institutional developments involving regulated digital asset infrastructure.
BNY Mellon recently confirmed plans to develop a 24/7 settlement system for traditional and tokenized U.S. Treasury markets. Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is expected to support that infrastructure after BNY Mellon became the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD.
Ripple executive Jack McDonald welcomed the development, saying RLUSD will help support always-on Treasury markets and institutional digital asset infrastructure.
Ripple was also included in CNBC and Statista's World's Top Fintech Companies 2026 list. The recognition came as Ripple expanded regulated services under Europe's MiCA framework and continued developing institutional use cases across payments, custody, tokenization and liquidity.
The company has also continued to expand XRP's role within regulated financial products. DBS and Franklin Templeton recently connected RLUSD with a tokenized money market fund. The involvement of asset managers and custodian banks of that caliber reflects broader institutional engagement with tokenized instruments, a category that has drawn interest from firms including BlackRock, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs across separate blockchain initiatives.
